A 28-year-old woman was tragically shot dead in Kanpur after intervening in a confrontation related to her younger sister’s marital problems. The victim, identified as Chandni, was attacked on Sunday evening and later succumbed to her injuries in hospital. Authorities report that the violence stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Chandni’s sister, Sarojini, and her estranged husband, Santosh.

Sequence of Events

The incident reportedly unfolded around 8:30 pm at Satti crossing in the Cantonment area of Kanpur. Police received an emergency alert through Dial-112 concerning gunfire and dispatched units to the scene. According to Commissioner of Police Raghubir Lal, Chandni was found with a severe gunshot wound to her abdomen and was rushed to KPM Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Earlier in the evening, tension escalated when Santosh visited his in-laws’ residence at approximately 5 pm. An argument broke out between him and Sarojini, during which Sarojini allegedly slapped him. Hours later, Santosh’s relatives reportedly arrived on motorcycles, prompting a confrontation with Chandni’s family. During this altercation, Vinod, Santosh’s brother, allegedly drew a weapon and shot Chandni at close range.

Following the shooting, it was reported that Chandni collapsed immediately and was taken to hospital with assistance from law enforcement. The assailants are said to have fled the scene after discharging a shot into the air, causing panic in the vicinity. Police and forensic teams quickly arrived to secure the area and gathered evidence for their investigation.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

As part of the ongoing investigation, police have detained three individuals for questioning regarding their potential involvement in the shooting. The authorities are actively working to identify and apprehend additional suspects connected to this incident. Commissioner Lal has confirmed that legal proceedings are underway, following a formal complaint lodged by Chandni’s family.

The police have indicated that this shooting is closely linked to the strained marital relations between Sarojini and Santosh, which have reportedly persisted for nearly two years. The couple has been living separately and has a pending court case since 2024 regarding their marital issues.

The body of Chandni has been sent for a post-mortem examination as part of standard investigative procedures. Police are continuing to examine the roles of those involved, aiming to ascertain the precise details surrounding the events leading to her tragic death.
