OpenClaw has announced the release of its most significant update yet, labelled OpenClaw 2.0. This platform, which was launched in November 2025, functions as an open-source AI agent tool that operates locally on users’ devices. It has garnered attention for its involvement in a viral AI-only social media platform known as Moltbook, where AI agents sparked discussions about an impending uprising.

The update was revealed on platform X, playfully referencing the upcoming release of GTA 6 by stating, “HA! We beat GTA6!” The developers described the primary aim of this update as enhancing usability, specifically through streamlined setup processes and an upgraded browser application.

Key Features of OpenClaw 2.0

One of the most noteworthy upgrades in OpenClaw 2.0 is the simplified installation process. For new users, the application will now utilise existing resources on their devices, including accounts from ChatGPT, Claude, or Codex, along with relevant API keys and local models. This modification is intended to facilitate quicker engagement with the AI by allowing users to initiate conversations swiftly, while configurations can be completed interactively through dialogue with the assistant.

The revamped browser app serves as a primary interface for user interactions and now opens directly into a chat with a user’s AI agent, known as Claw. The redesign focuses on conversation, positioning chat features, files, approvals, and settings in proximity for ease of access. Additional functionalities include pinned chat windows, grouped sessions, live Markdown streaming, and a command for side conversations.

Another significant feature is the introduction of simplified workflows and shared sessions. Users can create workflows that monitor specific tasks, such as notifications for important emails from a child’s school. The AI agent is capable of expanding its capabilities across applications without increased complexity while maintaining functionality.

Collaboration and Migration Updates

Shared sessions represent a critical advancement in user collaboration, enabling multiple team members to access a Claw’s context simultaneously without information loss. This feature allows for real-time participation and the transfer of tasks among users while retaining relevant data.

The update also includes a migration change, as the storage method for sessions and transcripts has transitioned from individual files to SQLite format. Users interested in reverting to prior versions are advised to back up their transcript data, as sessions created post-migration will not be compatible with earlier releases. Furthermore, migrations from other AI models, like Claude or Codex, will now occur in a staging area, ensuring validation before replacing existing setups.

Other updates involved a comprehensive reorganisation of settings, now housed within a full-page workspace. Conversations have additionally been enhanced to support user identity, permissions, presence indicators, and an optional incognito mode, allowing for increased user privacy and control.

It is noteworthy that Peter Steinberger, the creator of OpenClaw, joined OpenAI earlier this year. The project continues to operate under the independent OpenClaw foundation, bolstered by contributions from the community.
