He expressed that adopting such a mindset could lead to a detrimental societal outcome.

Vembu’s perspective suggests that modern financial systems and economic theories promote a culture where virtually all human activities are geared towards making a profit. He cautioned that this mentality could result in a dystopian reality, undermining the foundational pillars of society which he categorises as essential for human civilisation.

He stressed the responsibility of organisations, including Zoho, to ensure that these professions, which he considers the “bedrock” of human life, are supported adequately. Vembu articulated that the ultimate purpose of profit should be to sustain these essential roles, which encapsulate areas such as food, education, culture, and spiritual guidance.

Support for Farmers, Teachers, and Doctors

Sridhar Vembu has defended his viewpoints on the social media platform X, asserting that the majority of farmers and teachers do not enter their professions for financial reasons. He asserts that the motivation behind these roles stems from a passion for their work rather than monetary incentives. Vembu claims that farmers often remain devoted to their profession until financial hardship forces them to abandon it.

Additionally, Vembu draws parallels with the medical field, suggesting that the most respected doctors prioritise their ethical responsibilities to patients over monetary gain. He believes that a similar dedication is observable among teachers and priests, underscoring the notion that these professions operate best without the influence of financial motivations.

Despite this, he acknowledges that traditional economic models would categorise such behaviours as irrational, as they seemingly overlook profit. However, Vembu firmly believes that such character traits are integral to the survival of civilisation and that neglecting them could lead to societal collapse.
