Former England bowler Stuart Broad has expressed scepticism regarding Pakistan batsman Imam-ul-Haq’s calf injury, which led to his exclusion from the second Test against England at Lord’s. Imam reportedly sustained a low-grade strain to his left calf while fielding on the first day of the match, shortly after dropping two critical catches.

Following this incident, Imam was assessed by Pakistan’s medical team and subsequently ruled out of the test the following day. His unavailability put Pakistan at a disadvantage, leaving them short of a key batter for the duration of the match.

However, observations on Day 4 revealed Imam on the sidelines with his left calf taped, engaging in light batting practice and limping while moving. Such actions raised eyebrows and led to Broad questioning the authenticity of Imam’s injury, suggesting it appeared theatrical.

Broad’s Critique and Support from Warner

While addressing the situation on Sky Sports, Stuart Broad challenged the logic behind Imam’s activities if his injury warranted such serious consequences. He remarked on the visibility of Imam’s practice, questioning why he would be competing for attention in front of the audience if he was genuinely unfit.

Broad’s statements received endorsement from former Australian opener David Warner, who echoed similar sentiments, stating that Imam’s display seemed more for show than substance. Warner’s comments included a suggestion that he could have trained discreetly away from public scrutiny rather than garnering attention on the pitch.

This controversy over Imam’s fitness has intensified following his sudden withdrawal from the match, which was a focal point when there were reports of him testing his injured leg as well as participating in batting practices on the pitch. Such visibility was scrutinised, with Broad focusing more on the nature of the practice rather than questioning Imam’s overall fitness.

Past Allegations and Ongoing Challenges

This incident comes amidst previous doubts raised by former Pakistan batter and chief selector Mohammad Wasim, who had also questioned Imam’s injury issues. Wasim recalled an episode from 2022 during a home Test, when a physiotherapist alerted him to a potential injury before any public announcements were made.

He elaborated during an online discussion that the physio had informed him beforehand about the possibility of an injury-related announcement. This led Wasim to connect his recollection with recent events surrounding Imam, despite no official assertions from Pakistan’s team management implying that the batter had faked his latest injury.

As concerns grow, Imam finds himself in a challenging phase with his performance, having scored 42 and 0 in the previous Test against England, which Pakistan lost. The team is now tasked with managing their batting line-up carefully, especially considering Imam’s absence. The juxtaposition of his activity on Day 4 against earlier claims of injury has certainly heightened scrutiny over his current condition.
