Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on 31 August 2026, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek. The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral ties and exploring trade opportunities between India and Iran. PM Modi expressed India’s intent to “expand and diversify” its trade basket with Iran, signifying a commitment to strengthening the longstanding relationship between the two nations.

In a post on social media, PM Modi highlighted the importance of this partnership across various sectors. He mentioned that both leaders engaged in discussions about the prevailing challenges in the West Asia region, emphasising India’s dedication to supporting initiatives aimed at achieving lasting peace.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Randhir Jaiswal, described the meeting as “fruitful,” noting that it addressed multiple dimensions of the relationship between India and Iran. He added that the leaders reviewed recent developments affecting West Asia and reiterated the necessity of dialogue and diplomacy to resolve ongoing issues.

Concerns Over West Asia Stability

During the discussions, PM Modi emphasised India’s consistent position regarding the resolution of regional conflicts through peaceful dialogue. He underscored the importance of diplomatic efforts in maintaining peace and stability in West Asia, a region currently facing significant unrest and instability. The Prime Minister further stressed the need to ensure safe navigation and commerce in the area, critical for regional trade routes.

The ongoing tensions in West Asia present substantial challenges to more than just regional stability; they also impact global economic scenarios and shipping routes crucial for international trade. By advocating for a peaceful resolution, India aims to contribute towards a constructive dialogue among nations in the region, facilitating a more stable environment.

This meeting with President Pezeshkian follows the broader trend of India enhancing its diplomatic engagements in a region that is vital to its strategic interests and economic goals. Additional Engagements at the SCO Summit

In addition to his meeting with President Pezeshkian, PM Modi also held discussions with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the same day at the SCO summit. This separate bilateral engagement highlighted India’s intention to strengthen ties with Armenia, focusing on collaborative efforts in diverse fields.

PM Modi remarked on the positive nature of his discussions with Prime Minister Pashinyan, stating that cooperation between India and Armenia is poised for growth. Key areas of collaboration mentioned include defence, information technology, space exploration, education, and pharmaceuticals.

The Prime Minister expressed optimism about deepening trade and investment linkages with Armenia, projecting a future of intensified cooperation aimed at mutual benefit. This reflects India’s broader strategy of enhancing diplomatic and economic relations within the SCO member states.
