A political confrontation took place in the Tamil Nadu Assembly between Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of Opposition, and Aadhav Arjuna, the Sports Minister, focusing on the future of the Chennai Global Sports City initiative valued at Rs 261 crore. Earlier reports indicating that DMK may have abandoned the project, for which former Chief Minister MK Stalin laid the foundation stone earlier this year, sparked the intense discussion.

Udhayanidhi expressed concerns that, similar to the recent cancellation of the Parandur airport project, the Global Sports City may also meet similar fate, despite its intended purpose of nurturing Olympic-calibre athletes and developing world-class sporting facilities in Chennai.

Clarification from the Sports Minister

Aadhav Arjuna refuted the allegations regarding the cancellation of the project, asserting that it is currently undergoing restructuring. He emphasised that the land designated for the sports city would continue to be under the purview of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and would not be repurposed. “We have not completely cancelled the sports city. We are restructuring it,” Aadhav stated, reassuring that the initiative remains a priority.

He further elaborated on the original detailed project report (DPR), which included diverse sports facilities such as water sports amenities, an archery training centre, BMX tracks, and multipurpose arenas. Aadhav conveyed that the government is developing a new DPR aimed at creating facilities for approximately 42 sports disciplines, ensuring alignment with international Olympic standards.

“To establish a sports city, it must meet Olympic standards, a policy that this government shares with the previous administration,” he affirmed. The minister also made a commitment that construction would commence within six months after the revised plan receives the necessary approvals. This timeline aims to alleviate concerns regarding significant delays in the project’s execution.

Criticism and Accountability

During the discourse, Aadhav pointed out that while the DMK had incorporated the sports city in its election manifesto, the party had not taken a substantive action until January 8, 2026, when the tender finally came out. He accused the former DMK government of inaction, stating, “For five years, nothing major was done. No initial work has started on this yet.” He contended that Tamil Nadu needs a transformative sports framework, citing a lack of Olympic medal winners from the state in the past century as evidence of the need for change.

Udhayanidhi responded vigorously to Aadhav’s claims, highlighting that current TVK minister KA Sengottaiyan previously held the position of Tamil Nadu’s Sports Minister. He insisted that Sengottaiyan should address Aadhav’s remarks regarding the inactivity surrounding the development of international-standard sports infrastructure in Tamil Nadu.

The exchange between the two political figures underscored the ongoing tensions between the parties regarding sports infrastructure and development in Tamil Nadu. The future of the Chennai Global Sports City project remains a point of contention, as both sides work to assert their narratives while the project awaits further direction from the government.
