This situation unfolded across various social media platforms, where users shared videos and memes depicting the chaos faced by drivers left stranded in traffic.

The problem emerged when a mobile application allowed a user to remotely disable running e-rickshaws, creating confusion for both drivers and passengers. As drivers struggled to understand the sudden breakdowns, viewers seemed amused, diverting attention from the implications on the livelihoods of those affected.

The root cause of this disruption includes vulnerabilities in the Battery Management System (BMS) used in e-rickshaws. The findings highlighted a lack of awareness regarding password protection measures among drivers, which compounded the issues faced during the incident.

Understanding the Technology

The deployment of a Bluetooth-enabled Battery Management System (BMS) played a crucial role in this incident. Designed to monitor essential parameters of lithium batteries, the BMS also includes components that can be accessed remotely through a mobile application. However, inadequate security measures allowed unauthorised users to interfere with the normal operation of e-rickshaws.

A specific utility application, referred to as “BAT-BMS,” provided functionalities to control battery discharge. This feature, while intended for legitimate uses such as diagnostics and maintenance, was misused due to the absence of robust authentication protocols. The system’s vulnerability lay in outdated security configurations, which did not necessitate password entry, leaving the vehicles susceptible to tampering.

An official from a prominent battery manufacturer recognised the existing problems, noting, “Earlier models lacked password protection, making them vulnerable. However, improvements in updated versions now include such features.” This statement reflects a broader issue regarding the safety protocols associated with these technologies.

Impact on Drivers

Drivers reported feelings of frustration and anxiety as their vehicles came to an unexpected halt. One driver described how he experienced this disruption multiple times during a single day, saying, “I was completely in the dark about why my e-rickshaw stopped. It created chaos on the road.”

Many drivers had to rely on their peers for assistance, as some were unfamiliar with reconnecting the systems. The lack of knowledge regarding technicalities highlighted not only the immediate chaos but also the broader disconnect between technology providers and the end-users who operate these vehicles.
