Designed to monitor essential parameters of lithium batteries, the BMS also includes components that can be accessed remotely through a mobile application. A specific utility application, referred to as “BAT-BMS,” provided functionalities to control battery discharge. This feature, while intended for legitimate uses such as diagnostics and maintenance, was misused due to the absence of robust authentication protocols. The system’s vulnerability lay in outdated security configurations, which did not necessitate password entry, leaving the vehicles susceptible to tampering.

An official from a prominent battery manufacturer recognised the existing problems, noting, “Earlier models lacked password protection, making them vulnerable. However, improvements in updated versions now include such features.” This statement reflects a broader issue regarding the safety protocols associated with these technologies.

Drivers reported feelings of frustration and anxiety as their vehicles came to an unexpected halt. One driver described how he experienced this disruption multiple times during a single day, saying, “I was completely in the dark about why my e-rickshaw stopped. It created chaos on the road.”
