Who Was Chandranath Rath? BJP Leader And Suvendu Adhikari Aide Shot Dead In Bengal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Chandranath Rath was not a widely recognised figure in West Bengal’s political landscape, yet he held significant importance within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a close adviser to Suvendu Adhikari. The 41-year-old was shot dead in North 24 Parganas on the evening of May 6, 2026, marking a tragic turn in a complex political journey that began with his service in the Indian Air Force.

Originating from Chandipur in Purba Medinipur, Rath developed enduring political associations as well as personal connections with Adhikari. He was described by acquaintances as soft-spoken and disciplined, significantly shaped by his upbringing associated with the Ramakrishna Mission, where he pursued his education in his formative years.

Though he once considered a spiritual vocation, Rath ultimately chose a military career, serving in the Air Force for nearly twenty years. After retiring voluntarily, he transitioned into the corporate sector before gradually becoming involved in politics. His family, which had previous ties to the Trinamool Congress, shifted allegiances to the BJP in 2020.

Political Ascendancy and Contributions

Chandranath Rath officially joined Suvendu Adhikari’s political team around 2019 while Adhikari was still a minister in the government led by Mamata Banerjee. Initially taking on administrative roles, Rath evolved into a central figure in organisational matters behind the scenes. His efforts in coordinating logistical elements and managing sensitive political tasks proved instrumental in the BJP’s strategies.

Within the BJP context, Rath was acknowledged as a vital asset during significant political campaigns, including the high-profile battle for Bhabanipur. Those within the party noted that he gained Adhikari’s complete trust and was recognised as a rising star in the organisational hierarchy. His skills in mobilising party workers and managing essential operations contributed to the party’s visibility and effectiveness.

On April 30, just three days before the vote counting, Rath notably led a group of BJP supporters to Shakhawat Memorial High School, where Mamata Banerjee was present. In the absence of Adhikari, who had travelled to Kanthi in East Midnapore, Rath took charge of a protest against what he alleged was illegal parking of a Trinamool Congress vehicle near the counting location. His complaints led to a protest by BJP workers, resulting in police intervention to resolve the matter.

Tragic End and Implications

The violent episode that led to Rath’s death occurred when assailants on motorcycles allegedly intercepted his vehicle in the Doharia area of Madhyamgram. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the attackers approached his car and opened fire at close range. This incident has heightened political tensions in the region and sparked concerns amidst an already unpredictable post-election environment.

The aftermath of his killing has prompted renewed allegations and a flurry of accusations from various political factions within Bengal. Rath’s demise serves as a grim reminder of the increasingly volatile atmosphere surrounding political activities in the state.

As investigations into the circumstances of Rath’s death unfold, the incident has placed additional strain on party dynamics and public safety. The BJP and other political entities are now tasked with addressing not only the implications of his passing but also the wider social and political ramifications it entails in West Bengal.
