In the run-up to Durga Puja, the West Bengal government has unveiled an ambitious lineup of large-scale administrative and public outreach programmes aimed at engaging citizens across the state. The announcements were made on Thursday by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at Nabanna, the state secretariat.

Positioning the initiatives as a blend of governance and celebration, the Chief Minister stated that multiple public-oriented events will be held throughout the state next month. These programmes are expected to witness participation from millions of citizens, creating a festive atmosphere ahead of the Puja season.

A key highlight of the announcement is the observance of ‘Seva Sankalp Diwas’ on October 7, marking 25 years of administrative service by Prime Minister Narendra Modi—from his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister to his current role as Prime Minister.

Special events will be organised at district headquarters across West Bengal. On the occasion, the Prime Minister is scheduled to virtually connect with citizens from every district in the state, along with audiences nationwide.

‘Annapurna Diwas’ and mega lamp festival

Ahead of this, the state will celebrate ‘Annapurna Diwas’ on September 17 with a large-scale public participation initiative. A major attraction will be the ‘Pradip Utsav’, under which one crore earthen lamps will be lit across the state.

In Kolkata, the main event will take place along the ghats of the Ganges, promising a visually striking spectacle.

The School Education Department has also been roped into the initiative, with over 80,000 schools participating in programmes aligned with the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.

Students will engage in essay writing and impromptu speech competitions, alongside bicycle and motorcycle rallies organised across the state to mark the occasion.Tourism push with ‘Rangoli Rashtra’

Adding a cultural dimension, the State Tourism Department will launch the ‘Rangoli Rashtra’ programme. A massive 108-metre-long rangoli, designed in the shape of ‘Bharat Mandal’, will be created at Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata.

According to the Chief Minister, all preparations for this installation will be completed before the beginning of Devi Paksha on Mahalaya.

By-election areas to follow model code

Addressing concerns over the upcoming by-elections in two assembly constituencies, the Chief Minister clarified that programmes in those areas will be conducted in a limited and compliant manner, ensuring adherence to all official regulations.

Concluding his address, Chief Minister Adhikari urged people across the state to participate enthusiastically in the upcoming programmes, describing them as a collective celebration of governance, culture, and national spirit.
