Varanasi Creates History with 250,000+ Saplings Planted in 60 Minutes

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 1, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation successfully established a new Guinness World Record by planting over 250,000 saplings in less than an hour. This initiative took place in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency, Varanasi, where more than 20,000 residents participated. The achievement has received official recognition from Guinness World Records.

Miyawaki Method Used for Planting

A total of 251,000 Miyawaki saplings were planted within this short timeframe, surpassing China’s previous record of 153,000 saplings planted in one hour. To facilitate the project, a 10,827-meter-long pipeline, ten borewells, and 360 rain gun systems have been installed in the designated forest area, which aims to ensure efficient irrigation and water conservation.

Details of the Urban Forest

The forest, developed using the Miyawaki method by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, allows plants to grow significantly faster than traditional methods, leading to the creation of a dense forest in just two to three years. The urban forest spans 350 bighas and is divided into 60 sectors, each named after famous Ganga Ghats in Kashi, including Dashashwamedh, Manikarnika, Kedar, and Lalita.

Species and Additional Planting Plans

Approximately 4,000 trees have been planted in each sector, with a focus on 27 native species such as Sheesham, Arjun, Teak, and Bamboo. The initiative also includes fruit-bearing trees like Mango, Guava, and Papaya, in addition to medicinal plants such as Ashwagandha, Shatavari, and Giloy. Plans are in place to develop this area into an ‘oxygen bank’ in the years to come.

Future Development Features

In addition to the 250,000 saplings, plans for the project include the planting of 10,000 timber trees and 40,000 fruit-bearing trees. Further developments will comprise a four-kilometer walking pathway, a meditation and yoga plaza, a four-hectare flower park, a two-hectare herbal park, a children’s play zone, and an open gym plaza.

Official Statements and Recognition

Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University, Professor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, attended the event. Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari remarked that this accomplishment symbolizes the confluence of Kashi’s spiritual heritage and a vision for modern development. He attributed the initiative to the inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, calling it a proud moment for Kashi.
