Van With Four Skeletons Found In Punjab Canal 26 Years After Family’s Disappearance

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 26-year-old mystery surrounding the disappearance of a family in Punjab has reached a grim resolution with the discovery of an old van containing the skeletal remains of four individuals. The Maruti Omni van was recovered from the Bhakra canal near Kiratpur Sahib in Rupnagar district, revealing the tragic fate of the missing family members. Identified as Munilal, Tej Ram, Surjit Singh, and eight-year-old Kalu, they had gone missing on October 20, 2000, while returning from a wedding.

In the immediate aftermath of their disappearance, an extensive search operation was initiated by family members and villagers. Reports indicate that divers from other states participated in the search, which cost several lakhs of rupees, but the investigation yielded no results. Over time, the case faded from public attention until a recent search led to the van’s discovery.

Search and Recovery Efforts Highlighted

The recovery of the vehicle was made possible by local diver Kamalpreet Saini, who was exploring the 32-foot-deep canal. During his dive, he spotted the submerged van, leading to the eventual recovery of remains inside. Included among the findings was a shirt resembling a school uniform, which aided identification. Family members subsequently conducted last rites in accordance with their religious customs.

Family members expressed relief at the resolution after years of anguish. Sita Devi, the wife of Munilal, remarked that the family had searched tirelessly for the missing individuals, only to exhaust their savings without success. She expressed gratitude towards diver Kamalpreet Saini for finally providing closure after all these years.

Gurvinder, the son of Munilal, recounted that his father had gone to assist two guests at the wedding and had not returned. This sparked a lengthy search, which ultimately proved futile. The discovery of the van has offered a form of peace after years of uncertainty about their fate.

Impact on Family and Community

The extended absence of the missing individuals has had a profound impact on their family, both emotionally and financially. Sandeep Singh, a relative of the victims, noted that the lack of official confirmation surrounding the deaths had complicated their situation, denying them government assistance. He voiced hopes that the family might receive support following this new development.

Ram Kumar, the brother of one of the victims, shared that the family had spent nearly Rs 1.5 lakh on divers during their initial search efforts. They had initially conjectured that the strong currents of the canal might have swept the vehicle further away, making its eventual discovery all the more poignant, as it was found near the location from which it had reportedly entered the water.

Ram Kumar further highlighted the emotional turmoil endured by the family, especially their father, who spent years in distress over the uncertainty of what had happened to his loved ones. The recent recovery of the remains has finally allowed the family to experience a sense of closure after enduring nearly three decades of unanswered questions.
