Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Emerges as Contender for Sanju Samson’s Opening Role

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sanju Samson’s position as a first-choice opener is considered jeopardised due to emerging talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, as highlighted by former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar. Following India’s unexpected loss to Ireland on June 26, which marked the country’s first defeat against the Irish in any cricket format, pressure mounts on Samson to secure his place in the team.

Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old prodigy, has yet to make his T20I debut, but many expected him to earn his first cap in this series. Despite the anticipation, team captain Shreyas Iyer chose to retain the established opening partnership of Samson and Abhishek Sharma. Iyer’s rationale was a desire to maintain stability in a winning lineup, although he reassured fans that Sooryavanshi would have his chances in due course.

The need for a strong batting performance was evident, especially after India’s catastrophic collapse while chasing 183 runs in Belfast—an outcome that saw the team bowled out for just 148 in 18.5 overs. Samson’s early dismissal by Jai Moondra underscores his ongoing struggles, as he fell victim once again to a technical flaw with left-arm bowlers, despite initially scoring a boundary.

Performance Analysis of Current Players

Amidst the batting failures, Abhishek Sharma managed to hit a brisk fifty off 19 balls, but the rest of the batting lineup faltered, resulting in a disappointing performance. Captain Iyer scored only three runs, while vice-captain Tilak Varma contributed just 19. In the aftermath, Manjrekar advised Samson to remain vigilant, given that Sooryavanshi is rapidly becoming a viable alternative for the opening spots.

Despite this growing competition, it is expected that management will give both Samson and Abhishek a chance to improve their form. Abhishek has consistently performed well in T20 cricket, while Samson has shown his potential by delivering key performances in the recent T20 World Cup final and semi-final against New Zealand.

Sooryavanshi’s arrival in Ireland comes on the heels of an impressive 94 runs off 29 balls for India A, reflecting his burgeoning reputation. This follows his impressive run in the IPL 2026 season, where he secured the Orange Cap with 776 runs, including a remarkable 72 sixes, further highlighting his batting prowess.

Future Prospects for Sooryavanshi

Interestingly, Manjrekar supported the decision to hold back Sooryavanshi for the series opener against Ireland, citing the challenging playing conditions at Belfast. He noted that the ground’s expansive boundaries would have posed significant difficulties for a newcomer, making his selection at this juncture less favourable despite his excellent recent form.

Manjrekar commented on the challenging nature of the chase, emphasising that it would have required quick scoring in the early overs. He believed Sooryavanshi could have performed better than Abhishek in this context, but the overall task would still have been daunting given the match conditions.

Looking ahead, India aims to recover from their recent loss when they face Ireland again in the second T20I on June 28. The decision regarding Sooryavanshi’s debut will remain a crucial topic of discussion, particularly as India prepares for a subsequent series against England, commencing on July 1, across the Irish Sea.
