The CSR Journal Magazine

The Uttarakhand government has allocated a budget of ₹1000 crore for the upcoming Haridwar Kumbh Mela, as part of its broader initiative to promote spiritual tourism and highlight the state’s religious significance. This funding is part of the newly presented budget aimed at developing various projects across the region, particularly around Haridwar, a city recognized for its sacred temples and pilgrimage sites. An official statement from the Chief Minister’s office outlined the significance of Uttarakhand, often referred to as the “Land of the Gods,” home to important spiritual landmarks such as the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, the Char Dham, Adi Kailash, and a number of revered Shakti Peeths.

Comprehensive Development Plans Around Temples

In an effort to enhance the experience for pilgrims and tourists, the state government plans to invest in the infrastructure surrounding 48 temples through the Manaskhand Temple Mala Mission. This initiative is designed to bolster the state’s position as a prime destination for religious tourism. The Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, emphasized the importance of reinforcing Uttarakhand’s spiritual essence through these development projects.

Major Projects Funded in the 2026-27 Budget

The budget for 2026-27 not only allocates funds for the Haridwar Kumbh Mela but also includes several other significant projects. These include the Haridwar-Rishikesh Ganga Corridor, the Nanda Devi Raj Jat pilgrimage, and the Saryu River Front project. All these initiatives aim to improve the overall visitor experience, potentially boosting local economic activity connected to tourism. The government has already begun infrastructural improvements as part of the ongoing Badrinath-Kedarnath Reconstruction Project, which further complements these tourism enhancement efforts.

Additional Allocations for Pilgrimage Tourism

In addition to the Kumbh Mela funding, ₹25 crore has been earmarked for the Nanda Devi Raj Jat pilgrimage, signaling the government’s commitment to promoting various aspects of pilgrimage tourism. Moreover, the state has initiated the winter Char Dham Yatra, further inviting visitors during the off-season. The budget also includes allocations for riverfront development projects, notably the Saryu and initiatives for the Yamuna Ghat situated at Haripur Kalsi.

Support for Spiritual Education and Community Projects

The government is also invested in educational initiatives, allocating ₹10 crore for the establishment of a Spiritual Economy Zone designed to enhance the local economy through spiritual activities. Furthermore, grants totaling ₹28 crore have been designated for traditional Sanskrit pathshalas, underlining the state’s commitment to preserving and promoting cultural and religious education as part of its broader agenda to bolster spiritual and cultural tourism.
