West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday claimed that the newly formed BJP government has restored an industry-friendly environment in the state within just four months. He made the remarks while inaugurating what was described as the world’s largest fashion wardrobe at Salt Lake City Centre, an event organised by Bazaar’s Style Retail Limited.

Highlighting the achievement, the Chief Minister said the installation has earned recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records, calling it “a moment of pride for Bengal” ahead of the festive season.

Outlining future commitments, Adhikari announced that the retail group plans to invest approximately Rs 5,000 crore in West Bengal over the next three years. The company is also set to expand its footprint by increasing its centres in the state from 110 to 250, alongside opening 140 new outlets.

He noted that the company currently employs around 6,000 people directly across 275 stores in 10 states and supports nearly 75,000 indirect jobs through 825 MSME vendors. The expansion, he said, is expected to generate significant employment opportunities in the state.

Solar power push in Purulia

In a parallel development, the Chief Minister announced a Rs 1,900-crore solar power project in Purulia, being undertaken by the Agarwal family. The state government will extend land and administrative support in line with policy guidelines.

According to officials, the company has already acquired 100 acres and is in the process of securing up to 1,000 acres for the project. Adhikari said he intends to personally attend the Bhumi Pujan ceremony.

Responding to media queries, the Chief Minister urged the company to accelerate its expansion plans, requesting that the proposed 140 new outlets be completed within 18 months instead of the initially planned three years.

Major industrial investments gain momentum

The Chief Minister also highlighted a series of ongoing and upcoming industrial projects across sectors, indicating renewed investor confidence:
• Shriram and Lux Group: Rs 700-crore expansion project in Dankuni.
• Shyam Steel: Rs 15,000-crore mega expansion underway in Mejia, with advanced manufacturing units receiving inter-state orders.
• Amul: Rs 600-crore dairy and mishti doi plant under construction in Sankrail, along with two planned ice-cream facilities in North and South Bengal.
• Amit Metaliks: New project in Raghunathpur progressing after securing a Rs 1,500-crore loan from UCO Bank.
• L&T: Inauguration of a 7.45 lakh sq ft data centre in New Town.
• Haldia Petrochemicals: Rs 6,000-crore plant expected to be launched before Durga Puja.

Defence, infrastructure and corporate engagements

The state is also witnessing developments in defence and infrastructure. Four projects have commenced at GRSE in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, while a major DRDO project has been cleared at Junput in East Medinipur.

On the corporate front, Gautam Adani is scheduled to visit Kolkata on September 24 to lay the foundation stone for a 2,000-bed hospital in New Town. The Chief Minister also confirmed plans to meet Mukesh Ambani and Anant Ambani in Mumbai following the Ganpati festival.

Tajpur port relocated, land allocation drive ahead

Addressing infrastructure bottlenecks, Adhikari announced that the proposed Tajpur deep-sea port has been shifted to Dadan Patrabar due to the unavailability of government land, where around 1,700 acres are available.

Additionally, the state cabinet has approved the handover of land to 33 industrial units, with a formal ceremony scheduled before Durga Puja.

The Chief Minister confirmed his participation in a dinner hosted in Delhi ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit, calling it a “momentous occasion” and a matter of pride to represent the state at a national platform.
