A 42-year-old woman from Bokaro, who went missing on September 4, was found dead after a nine-day search. Her remains were recovered from a forested region, with law enforcement alleging that she was strangled by a mason with whom she had a relationship. The investigation into her disappearance commenced after her family reported her missing when she failed to return home on the specified date.

Authorities uncovered the woman’s decomposed body following the detention of a 52-year-old suspect, who was identified as Mustakeem Ansari. Technical evidence, including CCTV footage, was pivotal in leading police to Ansari. During questioning, the suspect reportedly confessed to murdering the woman.

Upon the investigation’s development, CCTV evidence showed the victim with Ansari on the day she disappeared. Subsequently, police brought him in for questioning, which ultimately led to his alleged admission of guilt and the guidance to the burial location of the body.

Investigations indicate that the victim and Ansari had a long-standing acquaintance, having worked together as daily wage labourers. Allegedly, they developed a close relationship, which became critical to the unfolding events. In the secluded location, reports suggest that Ansari strangled the woman and then returned home. Authorities revealed that he allegedly returned to the same site three days later, on September 7, where he dug a pit to conceal her body amidst the ongoing search efforts by her family.

The investigation officials described the condition of the body upon its discovery as significantly decomposed and reportedly mutilated by animals, complicating the process of identification. The woman’s son ultimately recognised her remains.

The murder has not only drawn significant media attention but has also raised concerns regarding the manner in which missing-person cases are handled in Bokaro. The recent case echoes with another local incident involving a woman named Pushpa, whose own disappearance resulted in a lengthy police investigation and substantial delays, leading to involvement from a Special Criminal Investigation Department team.

Senior police officer Rajiv Ranjan confirmed that the murder occurred on September 4, while Ansari buried the body three days later. The authorities are thoroughly scrutinising all aspects of the crime, including the motive and the precise series of events that led to the tragic outcome.
