More than 100 Sikh pilgrims from Pakistan found themselves stranded at Faisalabad International Airport due to the actions of immigration authorities who reportedly required a No Objection Certificate (NOC) before allowing them to board their flight to Sharjah. The group had been granted Indian visas for their intended pilgrimage to Sri Hemkund Sahib but was unable to progress further due to this unexpected demand.

Having opted for a more expensive third-country route for travel to India, the pilgrims were initially scheduled to fly from Faisalabad to Sharjah before continuing on to New Delhi. However, upon arrival at the airport, they faced delays and were subsequently informed that they could not board their flight without the NOC.

The requirement for the NOC was not mentioned to the group prior to their arrival at the airport, leading to significant confusion and distress among the pilgrims who had planned the journey for spiritual reasons. Missing their scheduled departure resulted in considerable financial implications and jeopardised their pilgrimage.

Legal Complications Raised by Pilgrims

The pilgrims, who possessed valid Indian visas, expressed their frustration regarding the NOC requirement, questioning the rights of immigration authorities to impose such demands. Jatha leader Papinder Singh indicated that the regulations regarding the NOC had not been communicated to them before their journey, causing further discontent among the group.

In a video recorded at Faisalabad airport, one of the pilgrims articulated his concerns, stating that they were not government employees or individuals facing any legal restrictions that would warrant the NOC. This remark highlighted the inconsistency in communication and the handling of the situation by the relevant authorities.

The group asserted their entitlement to travel freely given their legal documentation and expressed disappointment that proper guidance had not been provided throughout this process, ultimately leading to their current predicament.

Missed Flights and Financial Losses

The demand for the NOC resulted in the pilgrims missing both their initial flight to Sharjah as well as their subsequent connection to Delhi. Singh stated that had they been permitted to travel as planned, the group would have arrived in Delhi by Friday evening, thus further exacerbating their frustrations.

Financially, the pilgrims had already faced substantial costs due to their decision to choose this alternate travel route instead of the traditional Wagah-Attari land crossing. Singh noted that the total expenditure for their travel arrangements amounted to nearly Pakistani Rs 2 crore.

This recent delay represents a considerable setback, particularly as the group had previously received advice suggesting they should fly to India rather than take the land route, contradicting their current situation at the airport.

Appeals for Assistance

In light of the disruptions faced at Faisalabad airport, the pilgrims have renewed their appeals to the Pakistan government for assistance in facilitating their journey. The group seeks permission to traverse through the Wagah-Attari land crossing to enter India and reach their pilgrimage destinations.

Singh confirmed that the group remains at the airport, awaiting a resolution to their situation. They are hopeful that the authorities will act swiftly to rectify the issues that have prevented their travel, as their pilgrimage is of significant importance to them.

The ongoing situation reflects the complexities surrounding cross-border travel for religious purposes and the procedural challenges that can arise unexpectedly, affecting many devotees’ spiritual journeys.
