Uttar Pradesh Earns National Recognition at Sixth National Water Awards 2024

The CSR Journal Magazine

Uttar Pradesh has received national recognition for its achievements in water conservation at the Sixth National Water Awards 2024, announced by the Central Government.

Mirzapur was declared the Best District in the Northern Zone, while Agra Municipal Corporation secured joint third place in the Best Urban Local Body (ULB) category. These accolades highlight the success of the state government’s “Har Ghar Nal, Har Khet Ko Pani” initiative under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Mirzapur Leads in Rural Water Management

The recognition reflects Mirzapur’s effective implementation of programs such as the Jal Jeevan Mission and Atal Bhujal Yojana. The district has achieved significant progress in reservoir revival, construction of drains, and expansion of rural irrigation infrastructure. Active participation from local panchayats and youth has contributed to several villages reporting increased groundwater levels through rainwater harvesting and pond rejuvenation initiatives.

Agra Sets Example in Urban Water Conservation

Agra Municipal Corporation has emerged as a model for urban water management. The city recycles treated water from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) for use in parks and industries. Additionally, adoption of smart metering and leakage tracking systems has reduced water wastage.

The implementation of the Har Ghar Nal Yojana has greatly improved household water supply, establishing Agra as a benchmark for urban water conservation in India.

Statewide Efforts and Public Participation

Over the last eight and a half years, the Yogi government has turned water conservation into a statewide movement. Regular monitoring of programs like Har Ghar Jal, Har Khet Ko Pani, and the Atal Bhujal Yojana has ensured consistent progress across all 75 districts. Initiatives include reservoir revival, reinstallation of hand pumps, and expansion of clean tap water access for both rural and urban areas.

Pilot Projects and River Rejuvenation

Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, one village in each district, including Lucknow, is being developed as a pilot for 24-hour clean drinking water. Successful models will be expanded statewide. Parallel efforts for river rejuvenation and sustainable water management are also underway, reflecting CM Yogi Adityanath’s mantra that “every drop of water counts.”

National Recognition for Innovative Practices

Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil announced the award winners in New Delhi. The awards ceremony is scheduled for November 18, 2025, at Vigyan Bhawan, with President Droupadi Murmu as the chief guest.

Out of 751 entries from across India, 46 winners were selected, with Uttar Pradesh standing out for innovative policies, effective implementation, and active public engagement in water conservation.
