US Imposes 20% Cargo Fee and Enforces New Blockade on Iranian Ports in the Gulf

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States is reinstating a blockade on Iran in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. This decision marks a significant shift from Washington’s previous stance, which maintained that the waterway should remain open without any tolls for passing vessels. The US military has scheduled to resume its blockade of Iranian ports starting Tuesday at 4 pm EDT.

Trump stated on social media that under this renewed blockade, all nations would have fair access to the Strait, but they would be required to pay a fee. He indicated that the United States would be reimbursed with 20 per cent of the cargo’s value to cover security costs during transit. The announcement has raised concerns over the future of a recent interim peace agreement that had led to the easing of previous blockades since mid-April.

Iran’s Response to the Blockade

Iran has asserted its control over maritime traffic in the Strait and has pledged to resist any US interference. Officials have ridiculed the US President’s statement regarding the blockade and questioned the justification for imposing tolls on vessels. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, via social media, stated that while the US demands compensation, Iran has historically safeguarded the strait.

The International Maritime Organization, which oversees global shipping standards, has expressed opposition to any form of tolls in international waters. It reiterated that there is no legal basis for introducing charges for passage through straits, which could lead to heightened tensions and economic disruptions far beyond the region.

Previously, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated strong support for keeping the Strait free of tolls, emphasizing that there is no international consensus for charging vessels passing through the waterway.

Continuing Military Clashes and Regional Tensions

The renewed blockade has exacerbated existing tensions between the US and Iran, as military incidents continue to unfold in the region. Following an Iranian attack on a container ship, the US military reported carrying out strikes on multiple sites deemed critical to Iran’s defence capabilities. The military targeted air defence systems and other equipment, asserting that these actions are necessary to ensure safety in the waters.

Bahrain, home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, has experienced missile alarms, although no immediate reports of damage have emerged. Additionally, Kuwait’s consulate in Iraq was reportedly attacked amid these rising tensions, though the source of the attack has not been attributed. Other countries, such as Jordan, have reported successfully intercepting Iranian missiles, further illustrating the volatile nature of the situation.

Inside Iran, reports have emerged of several attacks across various provinces, resulting in casualties. The Iranian authorities hold the US accountable for the escalating violence, while ongoing diplomatic efforts aim to secure a final agreement to quell the conflict.
