‘US deal fully protects farmers’ interests’: Piyush Goyal Labels Rahul Gandhi as ‘Habitual Liar’ Over US Trade Deal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Union Minister Piyush Goyal has criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi calling him a “habitual liar.” Goyal accused Gandhi of disseminating false information regarding the recent trade agreement with the United States, referring to his critiques as a “fake narrative.” In a video posted on the platform X, Goyal asserted that Gandhi had “broken all records of speaking falsehoods” and made unfounded claims about the agreement aimed at farmers.

In the video, Goyal further accused the Congress leader of inciting unrest among farmers. He stated, “Rahul Gandhi is a habitual liar. In a video released today, he has broken all records of speaking falsehood and made baseless allegations. He is misleading our farmers with his fake narrative and trying to provoke them.” Goyal emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s consistent prioritization of farmers’ interests in governmental decision-making, asserting that the latest trade deal fully protects these interests.

Goyal highlighted that the trade agreement covers major crops such as wheat, rice, millets, soy meal, corn, genetically modified food products, spices, and potatoes, safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods. He mentioned that the deal also prioritizes fruit farmers, specifically noting protection for apples. He dismissed concerns regarding imports of dairy products and poultry from the United States, asserting that such openings would not occur. Goyal also expressed confidence that products like basmati rice, fruits, spices, tea, and marine products would gain new market access, enhancing India’s export capabilities and ultimately benefiting farmers.

According to Goyal, the trade deal is designed to foster increased exports which would enhance demand for agricultural products and lead to better pricing for farmers, ensuring their ongoing prosperity. The India-US Interim Agreement, announced the previous week, aims to establish a mutual trade framework that is advantageous for both countries.

The agreement will likely focus on eliminating or reducing tariffs on various US industrial goods and an array of agricultural products, including dried distillers’ grains, tree nuts, and processed fruits. In exchange, the United States intends to impose an 18 percent reciprocal tariff on selected Indian goods, which include textiles, leather, and certain machinery. Furthermore, forthcoming tariff adjustments could see reductions on generic pharmaceuticals, gems and diamonds, and aircraft parts from the US side.

Previously, Rahul Gandhi challenged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government to initiate a privilege motion against him, defending his stance on farmers’ issues. This challenge came on the heels of Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju’s statement that BJP members in the Lok Sabha would consider submitting a privilege notice against Gandhi for misleading Parliament and making unfounded statements.

However, reports noted that the Centre is unlikely to pursue a privilege motion against Gandhi, although there may be actions to expunge certain remarks from his earlier speech due to their unverified nature. The political exchange highlights ongoing tensions between the Congress party and the BJP regarding agricultural policies and advocacy for farmers’ rights.
