Ukraine Reports Deadly Russian Assault Involving 656 Drones And 73 Missiles

The CSR Journal Magazine

At least nine individuals have lost their lives and several others have sustained injuries following a series of Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine. This incident has been confirmed by Ukrainian officials, coming shortly after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated a significant escalation in hostilities was imminent.

According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia conducted an extensive assault involving 656 drones and 73 missiles during the night. The attacks represent a continued pattern of aggression against Ukraine, which has been ongoing since the full-scale invasion commenced in February 2022.

Casualties and Damage in Major Cities

In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that four people were killed, while 58 others, including two children, were reported injured as a result of the attacks. Klitschko issued alerts urging residents to seek shelter as explosions shook the city, indicating that air defence systems were actively deployed in response to the assaults.

Further east in Dnipro, a Russian strike resulted in the deaths of five people, with 25 others injured, three of whom are stated to be in critical condition, as reported by Dnipropetrovsk Governor Oleksandr Ganzha. In Kharkiv, another city affected by the strike, ten individuals, including a child, were reported wounded according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that many residents took the government’s prior alerts seriously, leading them to shelter in place as preparations for a potential large-scale attack were anticipated.

Official Justification for the Strikes

The Russian military has claimed that these strikes were intentionally aimed at Ukraine’s military-industrial complex. The Ministry of Defence stated that the operation employed “high-precision weapons” to strike key targets including military infrastructure and energy facilities across various regions, notably Kyiv, Zaporizhia, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk.

In a simultaneous development, a drone strike allegedly carried out by Ukrainian forces resulted in one fatality in Russia’s Kursk region, located near the Ukrainian border, as reported by Governor Alexander Khinshtein. Another unrelated drone attack led to a fire at an oil refinery in Krasnodar, with local authorities confirming the incident via social media.

This spate of attacks marks a significant turning point as diplomatic efforts mediated by the United States to resolve the ongoing conflict have reportedly stalled amid administration shifts. President Zelenskyy had previously emphasised the need for heightened vigilance, notifying the public to heed air alerts and ensure their safety.
