UAE Detains Ten Individuals, Initiates Fast-Track Trial Over Fake Iran War Videos

The CSR Journal Magazine

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced the arrest of ten individuals from diverse national backgrounds for disseminating misleading video clips on various social media platforms. This action comes in the wake of increasing regional tensions related to the ongoing conflict in Iran. According to an official statement from the UAE’s news agency WAM, Attorney-General Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi emphasized that these arrests followed continuous surveillance of digital platforms in light of recent regional events. The nationalities of the accused have not been disclosed.

Misinformation and National Security Concerns

Dr. Al Shamsi stated that certain events were manipulated to spread misinformation, which intentionally misleads the public while jeopardizing national security, stability, and order. Investigations indicated that the accused had posted videos featuring legitimate footage of air defense systems intercepting attacks and other fragments showing projectiles or groups of people observing various happenings.

Fabricated Content and Emotional Manipulation

The attorney-general further noted that the individuals under investigation circulated altered videos, allegedly generated using artificial intelligence, to falsely depict explosions, strikes on well-known landmarks, or significant fires accompanied by dense smoke across several locations within the UAE. Notably, some incidents involved exploiting the emotions of children in videos that wrongfully suggested security threats. Additionally, various pieces of footage inaccurately claimed the destruction of military installations in the country or misrepresented foreign incidents as occurring within UAE territory, aiming to distort public perception and evoke undue anxiety.

Legal Repercussions for Misleading Information

As part of the ongoing legal proceedings, the public prosecution has begun interrogating the suspects and has mandated their detention. The attorney-general clarified that such offenses are subject to penalties under UAE law, including a minimum imprisonment term of one year and a fine not less than AED 100,000. He reiterated that the public prosecution remains resolute against any attempts to exploit the digital realm or modern technologies for spreading misleading information or fabricated content that poses a threat to state security or disrupts public order. This includes the circulation of videos depicting the interception of attacks by UAE defense systems and the potential consequences stemming from such publications.
