TVK Chief Vijay Seeks 15-Day Extension for Questioning in Karur Stampede Probe

The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor Vijay, who serves as the president of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has formally requested an additional 15 days for his questioning related to the ongoing investigation into the Karur stampede incident. He has also asked whether the questioning could be conducted in Chennai or its vicinity.

According to sources, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is reviewing these requests and is expected to issue a new summons shortly. Previously, Vijay was questioned by the CBI on January 12 and 19 concerning the tragic stampede that occurred during his rally on September 27, 2025, leading to the deaths of 41 individuals and injuring more than 60.

CBI Probe Transferred Following Supreme Court Directive

The investigation, initially handled by a state-level Special Investigation Team (SIT), was transitioned to the CBI following a Supreme Court ruling that underscored the necessity for an independent and impartial inquiry.

The CBI has issued a new summons requiring Vijay’s appearance for questioning scheduled for March 10, 2026, as part of their comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Karur stampede.

Investigation Focuses on Crowd Management and Event Coordination

The CBI’s inquiries are delving into various critical components of the rally, including crowd management strategies, the timeline pertaining to Vijay’s arrival, and the collaboration between party organizers and local authorities.

Investigators are particularly scrutinizing the alleged seven-hour delay at the event venue, assessing whether this contributed to the crowd’s significant growth, from an estimated 10,000 to roughly 30,000 people, and the subsequent loss of control.

MLA Senthil Balaji Summoned Amid Investigation Developments

In a related development, MLA Karur V Senthil Balaji was summoned for questioning in the same case, although sources indicate that he did not receive the notice at either his residence or office and did not respond to any communications sent via email. The CBI initially assumed control of the investigation from the Tamil Nadu Police in October last year, post the Supreme Court’s directives.

Clarifying Event Organization and Risk Assessment

Key areas under investigation include the organizational aspects of the rally, focusing on who planned and executed the event, specifically determining when Vijay was informed about the gathering.

The CBI is also examining whether any prior risk assessments were conducted by Vijay’s team in collaboration with the district administration, alongside an evaluation of basic arrangements such as drinking water stations and designated entry and exit points for the attendees.

Vijay’s Movement and Coordination with Local Authorities Under Review

The CBI is analyzing the movement patterns of Vijay’s modified caravan as it navigated through the dense crowd, seeking to determine the level of coordination with local police.

Additionally, investigators are probing the timeline of events to ascertain when Vijay became aware of the stampede and the order of events that unfolded afterward. The inquiry also seeks clarity on the exact timing of his arrival and departure from the venue.
