The CSR Journal Magazine

India achieved a remarkable victory in women’s recurve archery, defeating South Korea 5-3 in the gold medal match at the Asian Games 2026 held on October 2, 2026. This victory marks India’s first gold medal in this discipline at the continental event, showcasing the nation’s growing prowess in archery. The Indian team consisted of Kumkum Mohod, Ankita Bhakat, and Kirti Sharma, who performed exceptionally under pressure.

The final saw 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod stand out as a key player. Her performance included delivering crucial 10s in the climax of the match, which proved decisive in securing the win against the traditionally dominant South Korean team. This was particularly significant as the Indian squad were competing in their inaugural women’s recurve team final at the Asian Games, facing a formidable opponent with a history of success.

Match Overview and Key Moments

The match commenced with South Korea scoring 54 in the opening set; however, India matched this score to level the game at 1-1. The Indian team showcased resilience as Ankita started with a 9, followed by Kirti’s 7, with Kumkum landing a critical 10 under pressure. As the contest progressed, both teams continued to display their skill, with the second set concluding at 56 points apiece, keeping the score at 2-2.

India shifted the momentum in the third set, taking a one-point lead after Kirti opened with a 10. South Korea struggled in their second rotation, scoring only 51 points, allowing India to seize control. With the requirement of just 24 points from their final three arrows, Kirti, Ankita, and Kumkum secured a score of 55-51, giving India a 4-2 advantage as they approached the final set.

In the final set, South Korea initially took a two-point lead with a strong opening, posting 28. However, the Indian response was crucial, with Kirti and Ankita scoring two 9s. Kumkum faced a challenging situation, needing a perfect 10 to equalise the set score. She delivered, tying the score at 54 and ensuring India’s historic victory of 5-3.

Implications of the Victory

This gold medal not only signifies India’s first triumph in women’s recurve archery at the Asian Games but also contributes to the nation’s overall medal tally. As of now, India has accumulated 67 medals in Aichi-Nagoya, which includes 11 gold, 23 silver, and 33 bronze, placing the country seventh on the medal table. This victory encapsulates a significant milestone in the journey of Indian archers on an international stage.

Earlier in the day, India defeated China decisively in the semifinals with a score of 5-1, paving the way for their final against South Korea. The success in the recurve women’s team event illustrates India’s rising archery talent, with further opportunities for medals as planned matches await later that day.

In addition to the final, Kumkum and Dhiraj Bommadevara will also compete in the mixed team semifinal against Japan, while the men’s team consisting of Dhiraj, Neeraj Chauhan, and Yashdeep Bhoge is set to face Iran. The mixed recurve event comes with Olympic qualification implications for the LA 2028 Olympics, presenting an exciting opportunity for India’s archers.
