The 157th celebration of Gandhi Jayanti took place in London, highlighting floral tributes and Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite bhajans. Members of the local Indian community, alongside prominent leaders, convened to honour Gandhi’s enduring legacy. The observance commenced at Tavistock Square, where the Indian High Commissioner to the UK, P. Kumaran, spearheaded the gathering.

This event at Tavistock Square included attendees from the India League, an organisation that has supported the installation of the Gandhi statue for over fifty years. Camden Council’s mayor, Councillor Patricia Leman, represented the local authority responsible for maintaining the monument, emphasising the significance of this long-standing tradition in the British capital.

Reflections on Gandhi’s Ideals

During his address, Kumaran articulated the remarkable impact of Gandhi’s legacy, attributing its strength to the simplicity of his principles and the courage with which he exemplified them. He elaborated on Gandhi’s belief that the quest for justice does not have to compromise humanity and that true strength is often reflected in restraint, conviction, and compassion.

Kumaran further underscored the core tenets of Gandhi’s philosophy—including truth, non-violence, and human dignity—as vital to any society striving for peace, inclusivity, and justice. He also acknowledged Gandhi’s connection to London as a law student, casting it as part of the “shared history” between India and the United Kingdom.

The High Commissioner highlighted how the relationship between India and the UK has evolved into a robust partnership across various dimensions. He noted that the Indian community in the UK plays an essential role in this relationship, contributing significantly to British society while retaining strong ties to their homeland.

Cultural Significance and Current Challenges

Alpesh Patel, President of the India League, contributed to the discussion by reflecting on the relevance of Gandhi’s message amid current technological upheavals, including artificial intelligence. He asserted that the online discourse characterised by hatred and vitriol presents a modern challenge that mirrors the struggles for independence in a different form, labelling it as the “independence of our minds.”

Councillor Patricia Leman echoed sentiments of diversity and inclusion that resonate with Gandhi’s vision, remarking on his global reverence for his commitment to non-violence. She positioned the area’s cultural values as being closely intertwined with those espoused by Gandhi.

The proceedings at Tavistock Square concluded with a Buddhist peace prayer, followed by renditions of ‘Raghupati Raghav’ and ‘Vaishnava Jan’, both of which are among Gandhi’s cherished bhajans. This segment of the celebration highlighted the communal spirit of prayer, reflection, and homage.

Floral Tributes at Parliament Square

The gathering then proceeded to Westminster, where floral tributes were paid at the Gandhi statue in Parliament Square. This statue captures Gandhi in a walking posture, symbolically overseeing the Houses of Parliament, serving as a poignant reminder of his principles.

The events in London merged tribute, prayer, and reflection, allowing speakers to recall Gandhi’s principles and their ongoing relevance in contemporary society. The customary floral homage at Parliament Square served as the culmination of this respectful celebration, reinforcing Gandhi’s influence today.

These observances reflect an enduring commitment to honouring Gandhi’s teachings and their application in addressing current societal challenges. The tribute not only brings together members of the Indian community but also fosters a broader understanding of Gandhi’s legacy within the UK cultural landscape.
