During a visit to Dublin on Saturday, US President Donald Trump expressed his support for a unified Ireland, deeming it a “fantastic” prospect. This statement comes amid a weekend trip connected to the Irish Open being held at his golf course in Doonbeg. While meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, Trump indicated his desire to see the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland come together.

Trump’s comments pointed towards the complex history of the region, where the question of Irish unity remains deeply contentious. He stated, “I don’t want to cause any problems but I’d love to see it unified.” He added that such a unification seemed inevitable and that it would be beneficial if it were to occur sooner rather than later, acknowledging the UK’s potential involvement in the matter.

The historical context of this issue reflects decades of conflict in Northern Ireland, which has seen approximately 3,600 casualties stemming from tensions between nationalists seeking reunification with Ireland and unionists wishing to remain part of the UK. Although the 1998 peace accord, facilitated by US intervention, largely reduced violence, it did not resolve Northern Ireland’s ultimate status.

Meetings and Protests During the Visit

Trump’s itinerary included discussions with Irish President Catherine Connolly and plans to address business leaders at the US ambassador’s residence. Connolly, a left-leaning politician, had joined protests against Trump during his previous visit in 2019. Notably, she has voiced her criticisms of US policies, particularly concerning the Middle East, and labelled Trump as a “bully.”

Upon his arrival at Connolly’s residence, the two exchanged greetings before engaging in closed-door discussions. Following this, Trump saluted while an Irish Defence Forces band played the US national anthem, before he inspected an honour guard. Despite the formal interactions, protests were anticipated in Dublin, indicating the divided public sentiment regarding his visit.

Local residents expressed frustration about the disruptions caused by Trump’s presence. Taxi driver Christopher Fox claimed that the president’s golf plans were negatively impacting the city. University student Mina Petrovski labelled some of Trump’s views, particularly those related to women and minority communities, as “abhorrent,” reiterating concerns over the Irish government’s warm reception of him.

Trump’s Continued Presence in Golf and Politics

Trump’s visit to Ireland included a significant focus on his golf resort, where the Irish Open was being conducted. Commenting on the economic implications, his son Eric Trump defended the family’s reputation in Ireland, asserting that their resort creates substantial local employment opportunities. He highlighted discussions with local residents who reportedly appreciate the family’s contributions to the community.

The timing of Trump’s trip coincided with the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, which resulted in nearly 3,000 casualties in the United States. Prior to his arrival in Ireland, he delivered speeches at political events in Dallas, Texas. His frequent attendance at golf tournaments at his owned properties reflects his ongoing involvement in both sporting and political arenas.

This visit was not Trump’s first engagement in Europe centred around golf; he has been involved in multiple tournaments this year at venues associated with his businesses. The inclusion of the Irish Open marks the second European Tour event held at a Trump property in 2026, following a previous tournament in Scotland, illustrating his focus on intertwining sports and his business interests with his political engagements.
