Tortured over dowry since marriage, newly-wed’s hanging body recovered near Kolkata, husband arrested

The CSR Journal Magazine

In yet another unfortunate incident of dowry death, the body of a 22-year-old newly-wed housewife was discovered from her in-laws’ place at Narendrapur, South 24 Parganas near Kolkata. The marriage took place just four months ago. But the in-laws were reportedly not happy and the girl underwent consistent ‘torture’ over demand for dowry since marriage. She was allegedly being pressurised to bring money from her parents. On Saturday, the hanging body of the young woman was recovered from her in-laws’ house. The deceased’s name is Sujata Kumari.

According to the police and the deceased’s parents, Sujata was married to Kundan Kumar Roy, a resident of Renia area of Narendrapur, four months ago. Allegedly, the torture started after Sujata went to her in-laws’ house. She was often beaten up. Not only that, she was also pressured to bring money from her father’s house from time to time. It is alleged that if she refused to comply, she was tortured even more.

On Saturday, the body of the housewife with a rope around her neck was recovered from her in-laws’ house. It was alleged that Sujata had ‘committed suicide’ after being unable to bear the torture. A written complaint was filed by the deceased’s father’s family at Narendrapur Police Station. The police recovered the body and sent it for autopsy. The police have arrested Sujata’s husband Kundan on charges of abetment to suicide. The accused was produced in court today, Sunday when the judge ordered to keep him in police custody for five days.

Dowry deaths in West Bengal, Odisha and Bihar

Dowry death remains a persistent and serious issue in West Bengal, with the state consistently reporting a high number of cases. During the 2017–2022 period, West Bengal, Odisha, and Bihar, along with several other states, accounted for 80% of all dowry death cases. Despite the existence of legislation like the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961 and amendments to the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the state’s dowry-related fatality numbers continue to be a concern.

Dowry death in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh has consistently recorded some of the highest numbers of dowry-related deaths in the country. Despite the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961 and strict criminal provisions under the Indian Penal Code, thousands of women still face harassment in their marital homes every year.

In a shocking case of alleged dowry violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district, a 23-year-old woman, identified as Gulfiza, died after allegedly being forced by her in-laws to consume acid. The incident took place on August 11 in Kalakheda village, under Didauli police station limits. Gulfiza was married to Parvez Ahmad, a small-time farmer, about a year ago.

According to the victim’s family, Gulfiza had been subjected to continuous harassment by her husband and in-laws for a dowry of Rs 10 lakh and a car. Her father, Mohd Furkan, claimed that the demands started soon after the wedding. Despite attempts to mediate, the situation reportedly escalated over the past few months.
