The situation in Nepal has seen significant developments, as over 11,000 individuals have been rescued from flood-affected regions. This rescue effort involves more than 22,000 security personnel actively engaged in search and rescue missions, according to officials on Tuesday. The scale of the operations has necessitated the deployment of at least 16 helicopters to facilitate the swift movement of rescuers and aid.

Spokesperson Shanti Mahat of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) confirmed that personnel from the Nepal Army are participating in these operations. Noteworthy achievements include the rescue of 254 labourers and technicians from the Upper Trishuli 1 Hydropower Project sites. Search efforts are ongoing, with assistance from Indian and Chinese tunnel rescue experts.

As of 8 am on Monday, the death toll linked to the floods has reached 939, raising concerns amidst ongoing rescue operations. Reports indicate that around 4,000 people remain unaccounted for, amplifying the urgency of the rescue efforts. The NDRRMA has updated the public on the identification process of the deceased, revealing that 927 bodies have been sealed, with 51 subsequently returned to their families after identification.

Of the sealed bodies, 726 remain unidentified, with 413 having been managed or buried according to international standards. This situation presents significant logistical challenges, necessitating coordinated efforts from local authorities and international experts to ensure proper handling of the deceased.

The increasing death count and the number of missing individuals underline the severity of the natural disaster, compelling the government and humanitarian organisations to expand their rescue and relief operations alongside identification processes.

Displacement and Safety Alerts for Affected Areas

The floods have forced many residents to evacuate, leading to significant displacement. Authorities have set up temporary shelters for approximately 2,970 individuals in various holding centres, providing essential assistance to those affected. The rapid establishment of these facilities reflects the urgency of the situation, as displaced populations seek refuge and basic needs during this crisis.

In light of the ongoing floods, the NDRRMA has issued alerts to residents living along the banks of the Bishnumati River. Reports indicate that the water level near the Gongabu area has surpassed danger levels. Officials are urging those residing in precarious areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid further loss of life or property.
