The prolonged impasse over the internal rift within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has prompted party supremo Mamata Banerjee to once again approach the Election Commission of India, urging a swift resolution to the ongoing dispute over party ownership, symbol, and funds.

In her latest communication, Mamata stated, “A long time has passed; the matter regarding the symbol and funds should now be resolved quickly.” Party sources indicate that her letter was accompanied by written statements from several MLAs, alleging that the Commission had previously been misled. The identities of these legislators remain undisclosed, triggering speculation in political circles.

The crisis traces back to the aftermath of the Assembly elections, when a breakaway faction of the TMC emerged under the leadership of Ritabrata Banerjee. Backed by a section of MLAs, Ritabrata now serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly.

The division led to a fierce contest between the ‘Kalighat’ faction and the Ritabrata-led group over control of the party’s official ‘Twin Flowers’ (Jora-Phul) symbol and access to party funds, escalating the matter to the Election Commission.

Election Commission Proceedings and Timeline

On July 2, the Election Commission issued notices to both factions, directing them to present their claims. Initial responses were filed on July 6, followed by submission of supporting documents by the end of the month.

During the final phase, MPs Mahua Moitra and Sagarika Ghose submitted evidence on behalf of the Kalighat faction. However, the Ritabrata camp sought additional time, a move opposed by Mamata Banerjee in her earlier letter dated July 29.

The Commission was expected to deliver its decision by August 15 regarding the party symbol and funds. However, with no announcement made and the month nearing its end, uncertainty continues to loom over the party’s future structure.

Political Circles Watch EC’s Next Move

With fresh claims from MLAs and mounting pressure from the party leadership, attention is now firmly on the Election Commission’s next course of action. The outcome is likely to have far-reaching implications for the Trinamool Congress and the broader political landscape in West Bengal.
