TMC Fielded Yusuf Pathan to Defeat Me and Do Polarisation Politics: Congress Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of engaging in polarisation politics with their selection of MP Yusuf Pathan as a candidate during the recent Assembly elections in West Bengal. Chowdhury made these assertions during a conversation with ANI on June 9, stating that the TMC aimed to defeat him in the Baharampur constituency.

He declared that substantial funds were utilised by the TMC to ensure his defeat and implement a strategy focused on polarising voters. Specifically, Chowdhury claimed that the party dedicated considerable resources to this effort. He also noted that Mamata Banerjee, the TMC leader, actively campaigned for Pathan, appealing to voters to support the Muslim candidate over Hindu alternatives, which had been the traditional voting pattern in the area.

Chowdhury’s comments underscore the ongoing tensions between the Congress and TMC, especially in the context of the shifting political landscape in West Bengal. His statements suggest that he believes the TMC’s actions are both calculated and divisive, intended to manipulate community sentiments during the elections.

Yusuf Pathan Responds to Speculation

In the wake of Chowdhury’s allegations, Yusuf Pathan issued a firm denial regarding speculation about his political future. On June 6, he refuted claims suggesting that Mamata Banerjee had requested him to resign from his Lok Sabha seat to pave the way for her candidacy in a forthcoming by-election. Pathan categorically stated that such reports were “completely false.”

Appearing in a video statement posted on social media, Pathan clarified that neither Banerjee nor any other TMC leader had discussed any resignation plan with him. He emphasized the inaccuracy of the circulating news, which suggested that his potential resignation was a strategy linked to Banerjee’s aspirations for a Lok Sabha seat.

This clarification from Pathan aims to mitigate the growing political speculation and reaffirm his position within the TMC, highlighting the importance of accuracy in media reporting and the potential repercussions of unfounded claims on political careers.

Former Cricketer Sourav Ganguly Addresses Rumours

The unfolding situation also attracted the attention of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, who sought to correct the narrative surrounding the controversy. Ganguly rejected media reports that implicated him in discussions between Pathan and Banerjee regarding a possible resignation from the Baharampur seat.

He unequivocally stated that he had not been tasked by Banerjee to communicate any resignation request to Pathan. Moreover, Ganguly highlighted the need for media organisations to verify their information before publishing findings, particularly in politically sensitive matters where public perception can significantly shift as a result of misleading reports.

This incident illustrates the interconnectedness of politics and sports in India, with figures like Ganguly being drawn into political discussions due to their prominence in society. As the weeks progress, it remains essential for all involved to clarify their positions and intentions to maintain transparency in the political discourse.
