“They Forced Him to Walk”: Second Death in Three Days Sparks Negligence Outcry at RG Kar

The CSR Journal Magazine

A devastating case of alleged medical negligence has surfaced at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a patient died after being forced to walk to a restroom while in critical condition. This tragedy marks the second death at the facility within a 72-hour window, pushing the hospital’s infrastructure and care standards into a national spotlight.

A Fatal Lack of Equipment

Biswajit Samanta was admitted to the hospital’s trauma care unit on Monday morning suffering from severe chest pain. Despite his fragile state, his family claims the environment was devoid of the most basic necessities.

When Samanta needed a restroom, hospital personnel reportedly informed the family that there were no functional facilities on that floor. They were directed to a “pay and use” toilet 100 meters outside the building.

“We begged for a stretcher, but none was provided,” his wife recounted through tears. “He was forced to walk in that state. He only made it 50 meters before he collapsed.”

Samanta lost consciousness while attempting to navigate toward the second floor. By the time he reached the emergency department, medical staff declared him dead.

A Pattern of Malfunction

The incident has ignited furious protests from relatives who describe the hospital’s infrastructure as a “death trap.” This follows a bizarre accident on March 20, where Arup Bannerjee – at the hospital to care for his four-year-old son – died after becoming trapped in a malfunctioning elevator.

Police reports indicate there was no elevator operator on duty at the time. Five individuals associated with the maintenance of the trauma care building have since been detained by Kolkata Police.

The Growing Accountability Gap

Despite the escalating crisis and the detention of maintenance staff, the hospital administration has yet to provide a formal response regarding the lack of stretchers or the absence of internal sanitation in a high-stakes trauma ward.
