Technician Dies of Electrocution on Bhansali Film Set, Sparking Safety Concerns

The CSR Journal Magazine

A carpenter named Chandradhari Yadav tragically died after suffering an electric shock on the set of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, Love and War. The incident took place three days ago at Filmcity in Mumbai, where actress Alia Bhatt was also filming. This unfortunate event has drawn attention to the safety protocols in place on film sets.

Compensation Offered to Family

In the aftermath of the incident, Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions has announced a compensation of Rs 40 lakh to support Yadav’s family. He is survived by his wife and two young daughters, who will require assistance moving forward. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) confirmed the details to media outlets and highlighted the need for improved safety measures.

BN Tiwari, president of FWICE, stated that they are advocating for increased compensation, requesting Rs 50 lakh, considering the young age of Yadav’s children. He emphasised the necessity of implementing stricter safety regulations on sets to prevent similar occurrences in the future. This tragedy has highlighted the vital importance of worker safety in the film industry.

Furthermore, Tiwari noted that the organisation is calling for better work hour regulations to ensure the well-being of technicians and crew members. The loss of a skilled technician under such circumstances is heart-wrenching, and their aim is to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Upcoming Film Details

Love and War is an emotional narrative featuring prominent actors Ranbir Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, and Alia Bhatt. The film is scheduled to be released in theatres on January 21, 2027, coinciding with Republic Day. This film marks the reunion of Ranbir and Alia on screen, following their collaboration in the 2022 action fantasy, Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva.

Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s latest project is anticipated as his first cinematic endeavour since the successful release of Gangubai Kathiawadi in 2022, which also featured Alia Bhatt. In an Instagram Live session, Kapoor mentioned that Love and War would premiere in theatres following his upcoming epic, Ramayana: Part I, which is expected to be released around Diwali this year, likely in the last week of October.

The film is set to be available in multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, further expanding its reach to a diverse audience. These developments reflect the ongoing evolution of the Indian film industry, as it navigates both creative storytelling and the safety of its workforce.

Call for Improved Safety Measures

The tragic death of Chandradhari Yadav has underscored the crucial need for enhanced safety protocols in the Indian film industry. The FWICE and other industry stakeholders are now pushing for significant changes to ensure that all crew members can work in a safe environment. The call for stricter regulations is aimed at preventing accidents and protecting the lives of technicians who work behind the scenes.

As the industry continues to grow, attention to worker safety is paramount. With high-profile accidents drawing media scrutiny, now is a critical time for filmmakers and production houses to take decisive steps towards ensuring the safety and well-being of their employees. The Memorial for Yadav serves as a sombre reminder of the risks faced by technicians and the urgent need to prioritise their safety.

Ultimately, the incident has initiated discussions about the responsibilities of production houses in safeguarding their workers. The expectation is that ongoing dialogue and regulation reform will contribute to a safer working environment for all involved in the film making process.
