Tamil Nadu Activist Conducts Mock Funeral for LPG Cylinder Amid Supply Concerns

The CSR Journal Magazine

A social activist staged an unconventional protest by organizing a mock funeral for a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder outside the district collector’s office in Salem, Tamil Nadu. This demonstration comes against the backdrop of rising concerns regarding LPG supply and escalating prices, attributed in part to global conflicts, including the ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel which have affected fuel supply chains.

Symbolic Procession in Salem

The protest was led by activist Parthiban along with his supporters from the Sanjeevirayan Pettai area. During the demonstration, a household gas cylinder was adorned with flowers and treated like a deceased individual, carried in a procession that mimicked traditional last rites. Activists described the event as a representation of the “death of the affordable kitchen,” underlining the challenges many households face due to increasing costs.

Engagement from the Public and Authorities

Participants gathered near the collectorate where the sound of a conch shell added to the somber atmosphere, attracting the attention of curious onlookers. Security personnel were present to monitor the protest as the crowd continued to grow. Activist Parthiban stated, “We are witnessing the funeral of the common man’s budget,” emphasizing that “LPG is dying, and the authorities are just watching.” This theatrical performance aimed to draw attention to the pressures created by rising LPG prices on daily life, urging for immediate action from the government.
