On Friday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay carried out an unannounced visit to the Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai. The primary aim was to evaluate the essential services provided to inmates, including medical care, food quality, and vocational training facilities. By engaging directly with inmates, the Chief Minister sought to gain insights into their requirements and concerns.

Inspection of Key Facilities

During his inspection, CM Vijay reviewed several crucial amenities within Puzhal Central Prison-1, which is one of the largest correctional facilities in the country. His tour included a detailed examination of the quarantine area, visitors’ hall, and the prison hospital.

Additionally, he assessed the de-addiction rehabilitation centre, classrooms at the Mahatma Gandhi Community College, library, and advanced computer training centre. Vijay placed special emphasis on the high-security block and the execution area, reflecting the importance of safety and security within the facility. These areas are critical for maintaining order and ensuring the well-being of both staff and inmates.

In an effort to gauge the practical skills being nurtured among the inmates, the CM proceeded to the vocational workshops. Here, inmates are engaged in the production of various items, such as iron vegetable racks, paper envelopes, and office file folders.

Review of Workshops and Services

Furthermore, CM Vijay evaluated the operations of the powerloom division, known for producing blankets and other textiles. He also examined the tailoring unit, which plays a key role in enhancing the vocational training for inmates. This focus on practical skills is aimed at facilitating their reintegration into society upon release.

As part of the visit, the Chief Minister personally assessed the quality of food provided to inmates. He interacted with them to understand their preferences and concerns regarding nutrition, indicating a commitment to improving their day-to-day living conditions.

After completing the prison visit, Vijay proceeded to the M-3 Puzhal police station. His inspection there involved a comprehensive review of daily operational activities alongside the station inspector. The CM examined various records and inspected critical areas, including the sub-inspector’s room, computer room, and lock-up facilities.

Accompanying Officials and Conclusion

During the inspection at Puzhal Central Prison and the police station, CM Vijay was accompanied by several senior officials, including the Director General of Police, Sandeep Rai Rathore, and the Director of Prisons and Correctional Services.

Deputy Inspector General of Prisons (Chennai Range) T Palani and Prison Superintendent Krishnaraj were also present, ensuring that notable measures were implemented regarding operational oversight. This visit by the CM underscores the government’s intent to enhance the conditions within the correctional system and ensure the welfare of inmates.

The comprehensive assessment conducted serves as a crucial step in ensuring that facilities meet the necessary standards and support the rehabilitation of those incarcerated.
