Sree Charani has achieved the pinnacle of women’s T20I cricket just over 12 months after her international debut. The 21-year-old slow left-arm orthodox spinner from Andhra Pradesh is now ranked as the No. 1 T20I bowler globally, following the latest update from the International Cricket Council (ICC) on June 23, 2026. This remarkable achievement comes after Charani surpassed England’s Linsey Smith in the rankings, marking a significant milestone in her burgeoning cricket career.
Achievements in Recent Competitions
Charani’s ascent to the top has not been a matter of luck; it is a testament to her consistent performance. In the previous year, she transitioned into the 50-over format and became an essential player for India during the 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup held in India. Her impressive record included 14 wickets across nine matches, often delivering pivotal spells that changed the game when her team faced challenges.
Her success has continued into the current 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England, where she has emerged as the leading wicket-taker, securing 10 wickets from only three matches. Charani started the tournament strongly with a three-wicket haul against Pakistan and subsequently delivered a standout performance in Leeds, claiming 4 for 12 against the Netherlands, which marked her second four-wicket haul in T20 internationals.
In a subsequent match against South Africa in Manchester, Charani showcased her talent again with a fierce three-wicket spell, further solidifying her position atop the rankings. Although India did not secure a victory in that particular game, her exceptional individual performance was enough to attract the attention of ICC rankings analysts.
