Sonam Raghuvanshi, the primary accused in the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, has surrendered before a trial court on Tuesday. This action comes in response to the Supreme Court’s cancellation of her bail, which mandated her to surrender within three weeks.

On the previous week, a bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and PB Varale upheld the Meghalaya government’s appeal against the bail previously granted to Sonam. The court maintained that Sonam was not entitled to bail at this stage of the ongoing trial.

The legal proceedings highlighted that Sonam was fully cognisant of the reasons for her arrest when she was taken into custody. The bench remarked that typographical errors in the arrest memo could not serve as a valid basis for her bail. Furthermore, the Supreme Court indicated that allowing her to remain on bail could interfere with the integrity of the judicial process as the trial approached a pivotal phase.

Background of the Case

Sonam Raghuvanshi and her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, travelled from Indore to Meghalaya for their honeymoon in May 2025. Shortly after their arrival, both were reported missing, leading to a search that culminated in the recovery of Raja’s body from a ravine. This incident sparked an investigation that unveiled an alleged murder conspiracy.

Investigators claim that the 25-year-old Sonam allegedly conspired with her supposed lover, Raj Kushwaha, and engaged hired individuals to carry out the murder, motivated by financial motives. Following the allegations, Sonam was arrested in June 2025 and has been facing trial alongside other co-accused individuals.

Initially, a trial court in Shillong granted Sonam bail in April 2026, an order that was later upheld by the Meghalaya High Court in June. However, the Supreme Court subsequently overturned these decisions, revoking her bail and ordering her to report to the trial court.

Responses from Victim’s Family and Legal Developments

The recent development has been welcomed by Raja Raghuvanshi’s brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, who expressed gratitude to the judiciary, the Meghalaya government, and the law enforcement agencies involved. He conveyed optimism regarding the judicial process and expressed a desire for a swift conclusion to the trial.

Vipin emphasised the importance of accountability, stating that he hopes all individuals implicated in his brother’s murder face severe consequences for their actions. He reiterated the family’s commitment to following the proceedings closely as the case unfolds.

With the Supreme Court’s decision, Sonam Raghuvanshi’s legal battles are far from over. She remains eligible to submit a new bail application if the trial does not reach a conclusion within six months, allowing her the opportunity to seek temporary relief once more.
