LaLiga Issues Apology to Chinese Fans Over Kylian Mbappe’s Remarks

The CSR Journal Magazine

LaLiga has formally apologised to its Chinese fanbase following Kylian Mbappe’s remarks regarding a meme linked to former Chinese leader Mao Zedong. The comments, which have sparked significant backlash in China, prompted the Spanish league to clarify that they do not reflect its views or those of its clubs. The controversy has also adversely affected Mbappe’s commercial relationships, with several Chinese companies terminating their partnerships with the player.

Official Statement from LaLiga

In a public statement, LaLiga expressed regret over the offence caused by Mbappe’s comments. The league clarified that the remarks were made in a personal capacity and do not represent LaLiga’s stance. The statement included an apology on behalf of LaLiga and its clubs, emphasising the importance of respect for diverse cultures within Spanish football.

LaLiga reiterated its commitment to its Chinese supporters, stating that respect, coexistence, and unity among various cultures are fundamental principles of the organisation. The league expressed its dedication to maintaining a positive relationship with its fanbase in China, acknowledging the millions who follow LaLiga matches each week.

Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, also conveyed his personal apologies to Chinese fans. He highlighted the league’s intention to collaborate with clubs and players to prevent similar incidents in the future. Tebas underscored his respect for China and its people, recognising the long-standing support LaLiga has received from Chinese fans.

Details of the Controversy

The controversy erupted after a video surfaced online in which Mbappe referred to a meme featuring his face overlaid on that of Mao Zedong, describing it as the funniest meme he had encountered. The remarks, reportedly made in jest, drew immediate criticism in China, where references to Mao are particularly sensitive. Social media users reacted strongly, with some calling for a boycott of Mbappe and his commercial partners.

Chinese state-backed media highlighted that the backlash reflected widespread anger among consumers who perceived the comments as disrespectful. As a result, several companies, including dairy brands Mengniu and Shanghai Milkground Food Tech, as well as beverage manufacturer Eastroc Beverage, announced the termination of their partnerships with Mbappe, citing a zero-tolerance policy towards actions that offend the Chinese populace.

Additionally, China’s state television has ceased broadcasting LaLiga matches and events involving Mbappe, and advertisements featuring the player have reportedly been removed from various platforms. While Mbappe has commercial ties with several international brands, including sportswear company On and hotel group Accor, these companies had not publicly addressed the situation at the time of reporting.

Reactions and Future Measures

Mbappe’s representatives did not respond to requests for comment, and Real Madrid also opted not to make a statement regarding the incident. This controversy follows a prior discussion Mbappe had about memes portraying him as a dictator in an interview with French sports publication L’Equipe, where he acknowledged that while some memes were harmless, others lacked political and human sensitivity.

A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry commented that words and actions perceived as offensive to the Chinese people would naturally face opposition from society. The situation highlights the delicate balance between cultural sensitivities and public figures in the global arena, particularly in the context of international sports and commercial partnerships.
