Cyclone Arnab to Make Landfall in Andhra Pradesh on October 28

The CSR Journal Magazine

Cyclone Arnab is anticipated to make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast on Wednesday, October 28, as confirmed by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The storm is predicted to reach the coast by Wednesday forenoon, bringing with it strong winds and heavy rainfall. The IMD has reported that wind speeds could reach between 125-135 kmph, with gusts potentially hitting 150 kmph near the cyclone’s centre.

As of 8:30 am on October 27, the cyclone was located over the west-central Bay of Bengal, approximately 220 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam. Following Tuesday evening, the cyclone is expected to shift northwest and make landfall between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, close to the coastal enclave of Yanam, which is part of Puducherry but situated in Andhra Pradesh.

Coastal districts from Krishna to Anakapalli are likely to experience wind speeds ranging from 115-125 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 140 kmph from early Wednesday morning until midday. By evening, these wind speeds are expected to decrease to between 60-70 kmph.

Heavy Rainfall and Flood Risks

On Wednesday, the IMD has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall across coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, with extremely heavy showers possible in isolated areas. Additionally, Telangana and Vidarbha may also see significant rainfall. Other regions, including East Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, are also under alert for heavy rainfall.

The IMD has raised concerns about a moderate risk of flash floods in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, which will remain in effect until 11:30 pm on Wednesday. Flash floods can occur rapidly when intense rainfall overwhelms local drainage systems and waterways, posing a serious risk to low-lying areas.

Reports from Mayurbhanj in Odisha indicate that heavy rain and strong winds have already begun to affect the region as Cyclone Arnab approaches the east coast. Residents in affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and prepared for potential flooding and adverse weather conditions.

Thunderstorms and Wind Alerts Across Regions

In addition to the cyclone’s impact, thunderstorms accompanied by sudden gusts of wind ranging from 60-70 kmph, and potentially reaching 80 kmph, are expected over Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Jharkhand and Telangana may experience gusts of 50-60 kmph. Isolated thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are also forecasted for Bihar, East Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Maharashtra, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The IMD has issued a warning regarding extremely heavy rainfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, as well as Odisha and Chhattisgarh, on October 27 and 28. Residents are advised to stay updated with official weather reports and heed the advisories issued by local authorities to ensure their safety during this severe weather event.

Furthermore, areas in East Uttar Pradesh, interior Karnataka, Kerala, and Rayalaseema may also experience gusty winds of 30-40 kmph. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
