Abhishek Sharma Scores 113, Leads India to Six-Wicket Win Over New Zealand

The CSR Journal Magazine

Abhishek Sharma delivered an extraordinary performance, scoring 113 runs as India secured a six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third T20I held in Wellington on Tuesday. This win allowed India to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the five-match series. Chasing a target of 199 runs, India reached 199 for four in just 13.2 overs, showcasing their batting prowess.

Sharma’s innings was marked by explosive hitting, as he reached his century in a mere 35 balls, further establishing his reputation as one of the most formidable T20 batters. His aggressive approach left the New Zealand bowlers struggling to contain the onslaught. Alongside him, teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi contributed significantly with a quick-fire 45 runs off 19 balls, helping to propel India to a record total during the powerplay.

India’s opening pair set a new benchmark in men’s T20 internationals, achieving an impressive 118 runs without losing a wicket in the powerplay overs. This record highlighted the aggressive strategy adopted by the Indian team in the match.

New Zealand’s Competitive Total

Prior to India’s innings, New Zealand had posted a competitive score of 198 for three, with Daryl Mitchell leading the charge with an unbeaten 89 runs from 52 balls. Despite this solid performance, the total proved insufficient against India’s explosive batting display. The match further illustrated the disparity between the two teams in the ongoing series.

Abhishek Sharma’s remarkable performance was central to India’s record-breaking achievements during the match. His ability to dominate the bowling attack not only secured the victory but also set multiple records that will be remembered in the annals of T20 cricket.

Among the records established, Sharma became the Indian batter with the most centuries in T20 cricket, surpassing Virat Kohli, who has ten centuries in 430 matches. Additionally, Sharma is now the third-highest century-maker in T20 cricket, trailing only Chris Gayle and Babar Azam.

Records Set During the Match

Sharma’s performance led to several significant records being broken. He now holds the record for the most centuries by a left-handed batter in Men’s T20 internationals, surpassing players from various countries who have three centuries each. Furthermore, Sharma achieved the fastest century against New Zealand in T20Is, breaking the previous record of 42 balls set by Ishan Kishan earlier this year.

India also recorded the fastest team century in Men’s T20Is, reaching the milestone in just 30 balls, which eclipsed Romania’s previous record. Additionally, the team registered the fastest fifty by a full-member nation in Men’s T20Is, achieving this feat in just 14 balls.

In terms of partnerships, Sharma and Sooryavanshi set a new record for the highest run rate for a 100-run partnership in T20Is, surpassing the previous record held by Jos Buttler and Phil Salt. Moreover, India’s powerplay total of 118 runs is now the highest in Men’s T20Is, breaking the record set by Romania.

Sharma’s achievements extend to individual milestones as well, as he increased his record for the most fifties scored off 20 balls or fewer in T20Is to nine, well ahead of several notable players who have achieved this on three occasions each.
