Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has unveiled a significant initiative aimed at enhancing women’s safety in the city. On Tuesday, she announced plans to install one lakh smart streetlights and 50,000 CCTV cameras throughout Delhi. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to create a safer environment for women, allowing them to pursue their aspirations without fear. Gupta made these remarks while addressing students at Daulat Ram College, where she inaugurated the college’s Centenary Academic Building, Computer Centre, and Skill Development Centre.

During her address, Gupta emphasised the government’s dedication to safeguarding the rights and dignity of women. She stated that the proposed smart streetlights would be integrated with a Control and Command Centre, enabling authorities to quickly identify and repair faulty lights. This system aims to ensure that the streets remain well-lit and safe for all citizens, particularly women.

Gupta also highlighted the importance of the additional 50,000 CCTV cameras, which will bolster surveillance across various locations in Delhi. This measure is expected to enhance security and deter potential threats to women’s safety. The Chief Minister reiterated that the responsibility for ensuring women’s safety lies with society as a whole and called for a shift in social attitudes towards gender respect.

Focus on Education and Skill Development

In her speech, Gupta reflected on her own experiences as a former student of Daulat Ram College, recalling how her journey in public life began when she served as the general secretary of the college students’ union. She expressed that her time in student politics provided her with valuable insights into the challenges faced by individuals, motivating her to address these issues on a larger scale.

Gupta stressed that education should extend beyond mere academic qualifications, advocating for a curriculum that equips students with practical skills and prepares them for real-life challenges. She underscored the importance of becoming self-reliant and capable of navigating various situations that life may present.

During her visit to the college, Gupta took the opportunity to inspect various facilities, including the Faculty Reading Room and seminar room, as well as the Shri Ramalaya in the library. She also reviewed the recycling and bakery units on campus, discussing the necessity of renovating the college auditorium and assuring the institution of her support for these improvements.

Encouragement for Extracurricular Participation

As part of the event, Gupta launched the ‘Miss DRC Talent Hunt’, encouraging students to confidently showcase their talents and engage in extracurricular activities. This initiative aims to foster a vibrant campus culture where students can express themselves and develop their skills outside the classroom.

Additionally, students from the Mahila Vikas Samiti demonstrated self-defence techniques during the programme. Gupta noted that such training is crucial for empowering girls, helping them to build confidence and prepare for challenging situations. She urged the students to speak out against harassment and intimidation, trust their instincts, and pursue their chosen paths without fear.

The event was attended by Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, Daulat Ram College Principal Savita Roy, college governing body chairman Mukul Gupta, faculty members, and students, all of whom gathered to support the Chief Minister’s initiatives aimed at enhancing safety and educational opportunities for women in Delhi.
