Self-styled Godman Asaram Surrenders at Jodhpur Jail After Rajasthan High Court Upholds Life Term in 2013 Minor Rape Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

Self-styled godman Asaram surrendered to the authorities at Jodhpur Central Jail on the evening of May 28, 2026, following the Rajasthan High Court’s decision to cancel his interim bail and affirm his life sentence in a 2013 minor rape case. This latest development came just a day after the High Court upheld the conviction and decided against granting further bail.

Earlier in the day, Asaram’s arrival at the Jodhpur airport attracted a significant number of supporters. He engaged with his followers, offering blessings from within his vehicle before heading to his ashram in Pal village. Following some time spent at the local ashram, he visited AIIMS for a medical examination before turning himself in at the jail.

On May 27, the Jodhpur bench of the High Court dismissed Asaram’s appeal, revoking his interim bail, which had been extended until July 7. At the time, he had been residing in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. His legal counsel indicated that they are reviewing the judgment and are preparing to contest the High Court’s decision in the Supreme Court.

Court Observations and Sentencing Impact

The division bench, comprising Justice Arun Monga and Justice Yogendra Kumar Purohit, provided a thorough judgment in this high-profile case, reaffirming the life imprisonment sentence initially handed down by the trial court. The judges made pointed observations regarding the effect of the crime on the victim, highlighting the violation of her dignity and freedom.

In the ruling, the court noted a poignant detail: the victim was born on July 4, the same day celebrated as Independence Day in the United States, representing ideals of freedom and dignity. It remarked on the grim irony that while a nation celebrated its independence on August 15, 2013, the victim’s own dignity and innocence were allegedly taken from her by a man she considered a god.

The court further discussed the influence of faith and the potential susceptibility of devotees to accept the instructions and beliefs of their religious leaders without question. This commentary was instrumental in conveying the complexity of the case and the societal implications surrounding it.

Charges and Convictions

While the court upheld Asaram’s life imprisonment sentence for the rape of a devotee at his ashram near Jodhpur in 2013, it notably acquitted him of charges related to gang rape and gang penetrative sexual assault of the minor under the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. This aspect of the ruling has generated considerable attention and discussion among legal experts and the public alike.

Asaram had previously been convicted in 2018 of raping the female devotee, marking a significant moment in India’s ongoing struggle against sexual violence. The recent court ruling serves to reinforce the judiciary’s stance on such crimes and the protection of vulnerable individuals.

The conversation surrounding this case is likely to continue, with significant implications for both the judicial system and broader societal attitudes regarding sexual abuse, faith, and authority figures. Asaram’s legal team’s intention to challenge the ruling in the Supreme Court highlights the possibility of further developments in this complex and sensitive issue.
