Saudi-led Coalition Accuses Houthis of Attacking Medina Power Station

The CSR Journal Magazine

The ongoing tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement have escalated following an incident in Medina, a city of great religious significance. The Saudi-led coalition accused the Houthis, aligned with Iran, of attacking a power distribution station in Medina on Tuesday. According to the coalition, the attack resulted in damage to a transformer serving the Prophet’s Mosque, although it claimed that the broader electricity network remained unaffected.

The coalition’s investigation revealed that debris from a drone was linked to the Houthis, indicating that the group allegedly planned and executed the attack. This incident is not an isolated one; the coalition accused the Houthis of making repeated attempts to target the Two Holy Mosques and incite a negative reaction among Muslims globally.

Houthi Response and Denials

The Houthi movement rejected the allegations, with a military source quoted by the Houthi-operated Saba news agency labelling the accusations as a “lie.” The source claimed that Saudi Arabia was attempting to distract attention from its inability to substantiate previous claims that the Houthis targeted Mecca.

Notably, two weeks earlier, Saudi Arabia stated that it intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone near Mecca, avoiding a breach of the sacred airspace over the city. This was regarded as the second alleged attempt by the Houthis to target Mecca since 2017, further intensifying tensions between the two parties. The Houthis maintained their denial of any intentions to attack Mecca or other Islamic holy sites.

Following the coalition’s latest accusations, reports emerged of Saudi airstrikes on Sanaa and various locations in Yemen. While Saudi Arabia did not immediately confirm these strikes, the Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces announced on X that they had conducted over two dozen airstrikes targeting Houthi positions in Taiz. These operations reportedly focused on missile storage facilities and command centres among other military assets.

Context of Recent Hostilities

This latest incident marks a significant increase in hostilities that have emerged since the termination of a UN-brokered truce in 2022, which had largely reduced cross-border attacks. Since then, conflict has reignited following the Houthis’ declaration of a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia in July, leading to various attacks on Saudi territory and maritime assets.

Houthi forces have also reported notable territorial advances along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, causing concern for Saudi Arabia. In response, the kingdom has conducted airstrikes targeting Houthi locations while simultaneously supporting government forces in their efforts against the Houthis.

The coalition reiterated its commitment to protecting sites of religious significance and pilgrims amid what it characterised as ongoing attempts to target these locations. The volatile situation continues to pose a significant challenge for regional stability, reflecting the complex dynamics of the conflict that have persisted for several years.
