The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor Sanjay Dutt presented himself to the National Commission for Women (NCW) on April 27 in response to a summons regarding allegations of obscenity in the song “Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke” from the film KD: The Devil. During the session, he conveyed his regret and clarified his lack of involvement in the song’s lyrics and creative process.

Dutt stated before the Commission that he had no previous knowledge or control over the song’s lyrics, translation, composition, or final output. He emphasised that his role was solely that of an actor performing under contractual obligations without any creative influence on the project.

Supported by his legal counsel, including Advocate Hemant Shah, Dutt expressed his respect for women and societal values. Through his apology, he aimed to acknowledge the concerns raised by the Commission regarding the song’s content.

Dutt’s Commitment to Social Responsibility

As part of his response to the Commission, Sanjay Dutt pledged to fund the education of 50 girls from tribal communities in Nagpur, Maharashtra, for the forthcoming academic year. He assured the Commission that he would provide a compliance report within three months regarding this initiative.

The 66-year-old actor further committed to implementing safeguards in future projects, aiming to ensure that his work does not disrespect women, children, or any other individuals. This commitment follows the backlash received by the song, which has been a topic of public concern.

Advocate Hemant Shah, speaking after the hearing, reiterated Dutt’s position, stating that the actor had no awareness of the controversial lyrics but offered an apology nonetheless, reflecting his utmost regard for women. Shah elaborated that the song had been recorded in a different language, contributing to the misunderstanding.

The Controversy Surrounding the Song

The song “Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke” has recently come under scrutiny due to its allegedly vulgar lyrics and choreography, with the Hindi version igniting significant criticism on social media platforms. In light of this backlash, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting informed Parliament that the song had been banned.

Following the government’s decision, the production team took down the Hindi version from YouTube. The song is a part of the upcoming Kannada film KD: The Devil, directed by Prem and featuring actor Dhruv Sarja in the lead role. The film is slated for release on April 30.

This controversy highlights the growing sensitivity toward content deemed disrespectful to women and societal norms. Sanjay Dutt’s apology and initiative to support education appear to be a response to wider societal concerns regarding representation and respect within the entertainment industry.
