Sachin Tendulkar Urges Young Cricketers to Focus on Discipline, Preparation and Family Support for Success

The CSR Journal Magazine

Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, during an event at the SRT10 Altevol Centre of Excellence cricket academy in Ahmedabad, advised aspiring cricketers to prioritize preparation and discipline, urging them to avoid shortcuts in their journey. Speaking on May 19, Tendulkar mentioned that while talent is an innate gift, its fruitful development relies heavily on focus and diligent effort. He noted that many proficient players fail to achieve anticipated success due to inadequate discipline and preparation.

Success Requires Sacrifice and Commitment

Tendulkar articulated that aspiring players must be ready to make personal sacrifices to reach the apex of cricket in India. He cautioned against the dangers of shortcuts, explaining that those who opt for quick paths may find themselves unprepared when facing the broader challenges of the sport. “To play for India, certain sacrifices are necessary. If you take a shortcut, you risk exposure as the game unfolds before a large audience,” he stated. He encouraged the young cricketers to be guided by their passion rather than solely by intellectual considerations.

The Importance of Time and Support

In his address, Tendulkar underscored that achieving success is a gradual process that demands significant effort. He emphasized the need for both parents and coaches to nurture the ambitions of young athletes while granting them the freedom to explore their potential. “Understanding that success does not come instantly is crucial. While aspirations for our children’s achievements are valid, hard work and supportive freedom are equally essential for yielding positive results,” he explained.

Parents Should Foster Resilience in Young Athletes

The cricket icon encouraged parents to avoid exerting undue pressure on their children, asserting that experiencing failure is a fundamental aspect of growth. He stressed that patience, appropriate guidance, and intent are vital for nurturing resilience. He acknowledged that setbacks, such as getting out or conceding runs, are commonplace in cricket and should not deter aspiring players. “Parents should promise to refrain from overwhelming their children with expectations. Failure lays a foundation for learning. With patience and clear guidance, especially on what is important, progress will follow,” he remarked.

A Vision for India as a Sports-Playing Nation

Tendulkar recognized India as a nation passionate about sports and expressed a desire for a transformation into a sports-playing country. He asserted that fostering a culture where engagement in sports is commonplace will help tap into the country’s rich potential in athletics. “It’s important to move from being merely a sports-loving nation to one that actively participates in sports,” he concluded.
