RTE Admissions Commence in Gujarat with 84,000 Seats for Class 1

The CSR Journal Magazine

The admission process for the academic year 2026–27 under the Right to Education (RTE) Act has officially started in Gujarat. This initiative provides over 84,000 seats for children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in private schools across the state. Families seeking to enrol their children in Class 1 are required to submit their applications online via the designated state portal, with the deadline set for April 17.

According to the Education Department, the admissions pertain to more than 9,700 private schools throughout Gujarat. The RTE mandate stipulates that these institutions must reserve 25 per cent of their seats for eligible children. This aims to ensure broader access to quality education for underprivileged groups.

Application Requirements and Guidelines

Parents must complete an online application form and provide essential documentation. Required documents include the child’s birth certificate, proof of residence, category certificate, and income tax returns. In case parents have not filed their returns, they must submit a self-declaration asserting their non-liability for income tax payments.

Officials from the Education Department have emphasised that there is no need for physical forms to be submitted post-application. Parents are encouraged to maintain a printout of their application for reference purposes. This streamlined process aims to facilitate a more efficient application experience.

This year, the state government has increased the annual income eligibility limit to Rs 6 lakh to extend the programme’s reach. Families falling below this threshold will receive priority in the admissions process. Furthermore, preference will be given to specific groups such as orphans, children with disabilities, child labourers, children of martyred soldiers, and those from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Below Poverty Line, and other economically weaker sections.

Criteria for Eligible Children

To qualify for admission, children must turn six years old by June 1, 2026. Applications for younger children will not be entertained. In the application process, parents are required to select between eight to ten nearby schools according to their order of preference. Admissions will then be allocated based on the availability of seats at the selected institutions.

Under the RTE provisions, once children are successfully admitted, the state government will cover the tuition fees until the end of Class 8. This benefit is intended to support families and alleviate the financial burden associated with education.

The Education Department has urged parents to complete their applications promptly, emphasising the importance of adhering to the submission deadline to prevent any last-minute complications. As the process progresses, parents are advised to remain vigilant and ensure that they have fulfilled all requirements for a smooth admission experience.
