Rajamouli Celebrates Honour as Costa-Gavras Watches His Films for Eight Hours

The CSR Journal Magazine

SS Rajamouli has recently received a prestigious honour with a permanent display at the Cinematheque Francaise in Paris, marking a significant milestone for both the filmmaker and Indian cinema. This recognition comes following an event filled with screenings of his acclaimed films, including RRR and the Baahubali saga, which have garnered a global audience.

The event not only showcased Rajamouli’s films but also featured a masterclass conducted by the filmmaker himself. The occasion gained further attention due to the unexpected attendance of Oscar-winning director Costa-Gavras, who spent nearly eight hours watching Rajamouli’s work, far exceeding his planned brief visit.

Cinematheque Francaise, established in 1936 by Henri Langlois, has long been synonymous with the celebration of renowned filmmakers worldwide. The event was made possible with support from the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne and the Ministry of External Affairs, emphasising the growing recognition of Indian cinema on the global stage.

Costa-Gavras’ Extended Engagement with Rajamouli’s Films

Among the highlights of the celebration was the presence of Costa-Gavras, the esteemed French-Greek filmmaker known for his classics Z (1969) and Missing (1982). Initial plans had indicated that he would only watch RRR on this occasion, with a promise to return for Eega another day. However, the day took an unexpected turn as he decided to stay for the entire event.

SS Karthikeya, Rajamouli’s son, shared on X that Costa-Gavras arrived with his wife and was so engaged by the screenings that he chose to remain for eight hours. Karthikeya expressed surprise at the filmmaker’s decision to extend his visit, highlighting the generosity of time and interest exhibited by the veteran director.

This spontaneous engagement not only reflects Costa-Gavras’ admiration for Rajamouli’s work but also strengthens international ties within the film community. Karthikeya’s comments underlined the inspirational essence of such moments, reaffirming their importance in motivating them within the film industry.

Rajamouli’s Future Projects and Ongoing Influence

As Rajamouli basks in the glory of this recognition, he continues to work on his upcoming project titled Varanasi. The film is set to feature notable actors including Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Scheduled for a global release in April 2027, Varanasi is anticipated to further enhance Rajamouli’s status within the international film landscape.

Rajamouli expressed his gratitude for the honour he received in Paris, stating that this new milestone would be cherished forever. He thanked Costa-Gavras and the Cinematheque Francaise for their warm reception and support of Indian cinema, underscoring the significance of the event in fostering global cultural exchanges.

Overall, this celebration of Rajamouli’s contributions to cinema, particularly highlighted by Costa-Gavras’ extended visit, stands as a testament to the increasing value placed upon diverse cinematic voices. Rajamouli’s continued success serves to inspire both current and future generations of filmmakers across the globe.
