Rain and Thunderstorms Hit Delhi, IMD Issues Orange Alert as Showers Sweep Capital

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rain and thunderstorms affected various parts of Delhi-NCR on Thursday, October 15, as dark clouds enveloped the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, cautioning residents about the likelihood of further rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds. This sudden shift in weather provided a welcome respite from the recent warm spell experienced in the capital.

The IMD’s warning indicated that moderate to intense rainfall could occur in areas of north and north-west Delhi. Wind speeds were forecasted to reach between 40 and 50 kmph, with gusts potentially hitting 60 kmph. Other regions within the capital were also expected to experience lighter showers and thunderstorms throughout the day.

On the same day, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 23.3 degrees Celsius, which is 3.7 degrees above the seasonal average. The maximum temperature was anticipated to hover around 29 degrees Celsius, representing a decline from the higher temperatures noted earlier in the week.

Causes of Rainfall in Delhi

The recent rainfall has been attributed to a western disturbance, a meteorological phenomenon that originates from areas west of India and moves eastward. Such disturbances can trigger rain and thunderstorms across northern India, even after the southwest monsoon has officially concluded.

Satellite imagery confirmed the presence of this weather system over Delhi, indicating its potential impact on the region. The IMD has also predicted that thunderstorms and rain will continue into Friday, October 16, suggesting that the wet weather may persist for an additional day.

Areas surrounding Delhi, including Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad, could also experience rainfall. However, the intensity and distribution of the rainfall may vary across these locations, leading to differing weather experiences for residents.

Future Weather Outlook

The IMD’s forecasts indicate that drier conditions are likely to return by Saturday, October 17. On that day, Delhi is expected to see partly cloudy skies, with the maximum temperature projected to rise to 32 degrees Celsius. This shift in weather could signal the end of the current rainy spell.

By Sunday, October 18, the weather is anticipated to clear significantly, with daytime temperatures expected to increase further. However, the ongoing rain, lightning, and gusty winds may still disrupt traffic and outdoor activities, particularly in areas experiencing heavier rainfall. Accumulated water on roads could also pose challenges for commuters.

While the changing weather may temporarily improve air quality by washing away some dust, the overall enhancement will depend on the intensity of the rainfall and subsequent wind conditions. With another round of showers anticipated on Friday, Delhi is likely to undergo a brief period of unsettled weather before clearer skies return over the weekend.
