The Bengaluru South City Corporation has imposed a total fine exceeding Rs 1.25 lakh on PVR INOX and Forum Mall staff for violating solid waste management regulations and engaging in improper waste disposal. This decision follows inspections that revealed alleged failures in the segregation and management of waste at both establishments.

During a recent inspection at the PVR INOX location on Hosur Main Road in Lakkasandra Ward, officials discovered that wet and dry waste were reportedly not being separated at the source. Moreover, the cinema was also found to be utilising single-use plastic items, which are prohibited under local regulations. In light of these violations, the corporation imposed an immediate fine of Rs 75,000 on PVR INOX, recovering the amount on the spot.

Of the total fine, Rs 50,000 was attributed to the alleged failure to segregate waste properly, while Rs 25,000 was levied for the use of banned plastic. The management of PVR INOX has been instructed to cease the use of prohibited items and to ensure correct waste segregation moving forward.

Forum Mall Staff Fined for Illegal STP Waste Dumping

In a separate incident, staff from Forum Mall have been fined Rs 50,839 for the alleged illegal dumping of sewage treatment plant (STP) waste near Shop Well Supermarket in the Jayanagar Housing Society Layout. This action was triggered by complaints from local residents about improper disposal practices.

Following these complaints, officials conducted an inspection of the site and found evidence that linked the dumped STP waste to Forum Mall. During this investigation, the staff reportedly admitted that the waste had originated from their premises. Consequently, the corporation acted swiftly to impose a fine that was also collected on-site.

The substantial penalties serve as a warning to commercial establishments in the region about the importance of adhering to waste management protocols. Local residents have expressed concerns over the public health risks associated with such practices, emphasising the need for stricter compliance.

Ongoing Vigilance from Civic Authorities

The Bengaluru South City Corporation is maintaining a strong stance on waste management and environmental cleanliness. Commissioner K N Ramesh has emphasised that all commercial establishments, including malls, cinemas, and hotels, must comply with established solid waste management regulations.

In his statements, Ramesh highlighted the necessity for these establishments to segregate wet and dry waste at the source and ensure its scientific disposal. He warned that routine inspections will persist, and legal actions will be taken against any establishment that violates waste management standards or neglects cleanliness duties.

Health inspectors, marshals, and personnel from the Solid Waste Management department have been actively involved in these enforcement operations, reinforcing the corporation’s commitment to preserving environmental standards across Bengaluru. The proactive measures aim to create awareness and encourage compliance among businesses to contribute positively towards the city’s waste management efforts.
