Political Earthquake? Rumors Swirl Over Mamata Banerjee’s Potential Return to Congress and TMC Merger

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a development that could fundamentally reshape India’s political landscape, intense speculation has emerged regarding the future of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). Speculation is mounting that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee might dissolve or merge her party to return to the Congress fold after nearly 28 years.

According to high-level sources, Banerjee has been offered the position of All India Vice President of the Congress party following a confidential, one-on-one meeting with veteran Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.

High-Profile Roles on the Table

The proposed political realignment extends beyond the TMC supremo. Sources indicate that:

Mamata Banerjee has been offered the post of All India Congress Vice President by Sonia Gandhi. Banerjee has reportedly requested some time to deliberate on the offer.

Abhishek Banerjee, the TMC National General Secretary, has allegedly been offered the role of General Secretary in the Congress party by Rahul Gandhi.

This potential homecoming comes nearly three decades after Mamata Banerjee broke away from the Congress in 1998 to form the TMC, which has since dominated West Bengal politics.

Internal Friction Within Congress

While the top leadership appears to be driving the talks, the development has sparked immediate friction within the Congress party’s state unit. Local leaders in West Bengal have expressed serious reservations about welcoming individuals currently facing corruption and graft allegations.

Significantly, State Congress Presidents are scheduled to meet in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss these developments.

When questioned about the potential merger, West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) President Subhankar Sarkar maintained a measured but firm stance:

“Politics is the art of the possible,” Sarkar said. “We cannot offer a premature reaction from the state unit. However, I will say this: Rahul Gandhi is leading the relentless fight against the RSS ideology and the BJP to save the Constitution. Anyone who accepts his leadership and has the courage to fight the BJP without fear is welcome. But there is no room for the corrupt in Congress; they need a separate washing machine.”

BJP Takes a Dig at the Speculation

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reacted sharply to the rumors. Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State for Education and former BJP West Bengal chief, commented on the irony of the potential political full-circle.

“No one truly knows what transpired behind closed doors, so it is inappropriate to comment definitively,” Majumdar remarked. “However, given that Mamata Banerjee started her journey with the Congress, if she returns, it will simply be a case of ‘Punar Mushiko Bhava’ (returning to one’s original, lesser state).”

Majumdar further questioned the political viability of the move, adding, “Given the current state of the Congress—lacking both strong leadership and grassroots workers—whether they accept her is their internal matter. But realistically, considering her age, it is worth asking how much she has left to offer to the Congress or any other party.”

As political circles in both Kolkata and New Delhi closely monitor the situation, tomorrow’s high-level Congress meeting in the national capital is expected to bring clarity to these fast-evolving rumors.
