PM Modi Highlights War in West Asia as a Significant Crisis for the Decade

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasised that the ongoing conflict in West Asia is creating substantial challenges for the world, labelling it as one of the significant crises of the decade. Addressing a gathering in Vadodara on May 11, 2023, he remarked that the disruptions stemming from this conflict are reminiscent of the crises caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

During his remarks, Modi noted the persistent instabilities that have plagued the world, pointing out that the ramifications of the pandemic, coupled with current global economic dilemmas and the tensions in West Asia, are being felt universally, including in India. He urged citizens to be vigilant and conscious of their spending habits, particularly regarding imported goods.

Modi stated that India incurs vast expenses—amounting to lakhs of crores of rupees—through imports from various countries. To alleviate the pressure on foreign exchange resources, he called on citizens to adopt the “vocal for local” mantra, thus encouraging a reduced dependency on foreign products.

Call for Unity and Responsibility

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that just as citizens united to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic, they can similarly navigate the current issues arising from the West Asia conflict. He remarked that previous crises have seen the government call upon the people to contribute towards national stability and citizens have always risen to the occasion.

Modi drew parallels with past crises, stating that historical instances of war or significant challenges have prompted citizens to respond altruistically to governmental appeals. He reiterated the importance of collective responsibility in lessening the burden on the nation’s resources. By choosing local products over imported ones, he argued, citizens can make a meaningful impact.

He stressed the soaring prices of imported goods and the disruptions in global supply chains, highlighting the vital need for every individual to adjust their consumption patterns to limit foreign dependency in both personal finances and daily activities. This appeal for solidarity and proactive participation from citizens is aimed at fostering a more self-sufficient economy.

Acknowledgement of Political Achievements in Gujarat

Modi also took a moment to acknowledge the recent election results from West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry, which he claimed have inspired enthusiasm nationwide. He articulated that these outcomes reflect the commitment and political awareness of the citizens, particularly in Gujarat, where local body and Panchayat elections have reportedly yielded outstanding results.

He praised the people of Gujarat for their longstanding inclination towards political stability, which he attributed to their understanding of its significance for economic growth. The Prime Minister stated that such political foresight has historically benefited the state and continued to propel its development.

In his address, Modi expressed gratitude for participating in local events, describing the experience as deeply gratifying. To mark his day in Vadodara, he attended the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav at Somnath Temple, making it clear that the temple serves as a vital symbol of India’s cultural heritage and spiritual resilience.

As part of the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the temple’s restoration, Modi took part in various religious and cultural activities, including a significant puja and the ceremonial hoisting of the temple flag, reaffirming his commitment to India’s civilisational heritage and community spirit.
