PM Modi Issues Rallying Cry for ‘Developed Bengal’ in ‘Poila Baisakh’ Message to Voters

The CSR Journal Magazine

As West Bengal gears up for a high-stakes, multi-phase assembly election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached out directly to the electorate with a poignant open letter. Timed to coincide with the Bengali New Year (Poila Baisakh), the message combines traditional greetings with a searing critique of the state’s current administration, setting a combative tone for the weeks ahead.

A Vision for ‘Viksit Paschim Banga’

Invoking the blessings of Goddess Kali, the Prime Minister expressed his desire for a “vibrant and prosperous” future for the people of Bengal. However, the letter quickly shifted from festive warmth to political indictment. Modi claimed his heart was “heavy” observing the current state of the region, alleging that the past 15 years of Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule have been defined by “misgovernance, chaos, and corruption.”

The Prime Minister emphasized that the upcoming 2026 election is not merely a political contest but a pivotal moment for the state’s trajectory.

“In this election, we must make the right decision, not just for ourselves, but to pave the way for a bright future for our upcoming generations,” he wrote.

Modi outlined his vision for a “Developed West Bengal,” promising a “double-engine government” that ensures housing for the poor, food security, and, crucially, the safety of women. He pledged to halt the migration of youth seeking employment elsewhere by creating local opportunities.

Political Heat Intensifies

The timing of the letter underscores the escalating political temperature in the state. With the Election Commission scheduling polls for April 23 and April 29, Bengal has become a national political battlefield.

The BJP is banking on strong anti-incumbency sentiments, highlighting issues like law and order and the alleged siphoning of central funds. Meanwhile, the TMC remains a formidable opponent, centering its campaign on “Bengali identity” and its suite of social welfare schemes.

The Prime Minister’s letter serves as a final strategic push to consolidate the opposition vote, expressing supreme confidence that the people of Bengal will deliver a “historic victory” for the BJP. As the state nears the first phase of voting, such direct appeals suggest that the battle for the Nabanna will be fought on every doorstep.
